It's good that public sentiment flipped as soon as people saw the consequences of the things they thought they wanted, but we have a serious problem if we're going to keep cycling through this process forever.

It is so lucky for Democrats that this kind of discourse is no longer on Twitter where the national media and politicians would see it. Better for it to be sealed off in this asylum. This is genuinely just insane.
Robert Byrd seemed to genuinely repent for his past and spent decades atoning for it, to the point where the NAACP mourned his death as the loss of a civil rights champion. People can indeed change.

But there's no sign of a similar arc of sincere repentance and reckoning in Platner's case.

I do not think dixiecrat segregationists are the bar we should be aiming to clear in 2025

Also Byrd unreservedly repented from his previous views, Platner has nothing but excuses about how he didn't know it was a nazi tattoo bu if he did it's not a big deal anyway

my lukewarm take is that normal people don't like the east wing being demolished and at some point they're gonna see a list of all the corporate donors for the ballroom and blame them for it

I agree they aren’t in tension with each other!

I don’t agree that everyone who isn’t ready to cancel Platner and endorse the 79 year old filibuster lover is a leftist Chauvinist!

It’s also wild to complain it’s a false choice when your framing is literally setting that false choice up.
It's not about Berniebros--its about the false notion that social justice and economic populism are in tension with one another. I want a better choice than picking between liberal feminism and leftist chauvinism
Whatever you think about the Platner tattoo situation- glad we can go back to the toxic Bernie bro narrative as we attempt to build a movement against fascism in this country. Eyes on the prize.

In general there are many Democratic and leftist men who feel they could have 60 Platners elected across the country if they didn't let themselves be emasculated by the woke scolds and feminists they associate with the failures of the Democratic establishment making them hesitant to let Platner go

The entire "free speech on campus" moral panic was manufactured to blackmail us into making space in intellectual life for bigots and charlatans who couldn't get there on their own merits. Its a DEI scheme for fascism. Congratulations to everyone who took it at face value.

Ross Douthat treats this guy like they're having some deep conversation about the relationship of Christianity and the government, but the dude is a garden-variety dull, shallow, hateful, worthless bigot with nothing interesting to say, just endless riffs on "God hates everything/everyone I do."

Wen should direct more attention to incidents like these because Americans are more likely to respond to brutality to pets than to brutality to human beings.

When prices were going up under Biden there was a constant deluge of news stories about it because the media did not like Biden and wanted him to lose. Under Trump there is not a constant deluge of news stories about coffee prices because they like Trump and want him to win
everything is on fire these days, sure, but how is it that 50% of all news stories are not about how I just spent $20 on a bag of store brand coffee at fucking costco

Hopefully the whole Bari Weiss thing and Ezra Klein thing starts waking people up to the fact that corporate media is mostly populated with mediocre people who have made millions and gained unbelievable influence because they threaten nothing and tell wealthy people exactly what they want to hear.

This is evil. There is nothing Christian about this.
The Trump administration has cancelled 4,304 deliveries to food banks so far this year, refusing to deliver 94 million pounds of contracted-for food. Food banks simply can’t feed people enough anymore. Millions of Americans are going hungry as a result.

ProPublica obtained records from the Department of Agriculture that detail the millions of pounds of food, down to the number of eggs, that never reached food banks because of the administration’s cut...

This is an evergreen, but if Joe Biden had given a speech like this, every reporter in America would’ve had their head exploded. Instead, we get shrugs.

So yes, seems like the algorithm is working as intended!

We’re already living through Trump’s crackdown on the left. Troops to cities, ICE targeting, mass firings, higher ed, media, science, etc.

They don’t have some big cards they’ve been holding back.

They do, however, constantly try to pretend they have more to scare people into acting as if they do.
If you're writing about how Stephen Miller's going to use this as a pretext for going after the left I think it's incumbent on you to say how he plans on doing that. Otherwise it's just scaring people into submission before he's done anything.

If there's one thing I wish I could get every earnest liberal to understand, it's that, from the point of view of an authoritarian psychology, efforts to persuade, to "reach out" & "find common ground," are *viewed as evidence of weakness*.

This is—it bears repeating—ethnic cleansing and a war crime. It feels utterly pointless to say, and roughly equivalent to screaming into the void, but the United States should not be supporting or providing any aid to a state that has ethnic cleansing as a policy position.

The fact that some people insist on trying this strategy- over and over and over again - even though it doesn't work demonstrates that its advocates are committed to *the strategy itself*, not to winning or accomplishing anything.
