The left/right schism is fundamentally a rift between people whose extensive training in literacy has insulated them from the disorienting effects of the internet, but only through a process of detachment; and people without all that, plus some sociopaths.

in a way I think this is true. "Don't tread on me" doesn't mean, "it is morally wrong to tread on me because I want to be free," it means "I am violent and dangerous and if you tread on me I will kill you."
No I said don’t tread on *me*. You can get treaded on.

It's all The Work. It's *all* The Work.

Maybe you can't babysit, but you can make sure folks get fed.

Or walk their dogs. Or do laundry. Or drive folks from point A to point B. Or can coordinate the helpers.

Or buy groceries for folks too scared to leave their homes.

IT'S ALL THE WORK.
Reminder that there are lots of ways to contribute to resisting. My back is turbo-fucked so I can't protest for hours on end, but I can babysit for those who choose to do so.

The leading cause of death by far among ICE officers is COVID-19.
How dangerous is it really to work for ICE?
According to ICE’s own data, none of its officers have been killed by an immigrant in the agency’s history.

Yeah, this is a good thread.
3/7: in fact, believability even works against you. the more absurd the story, the more exciting it is to insist on it, the more powerful you feel in imposing it, the tighter the in-group bond grows, the more you laugh together at the outgroup wasting time "debunking" shit you don't believe anyway.

1/7: i don't think this is quite right in terms of first-order purpose, which is to invite you into the in-group. it's less "this is what we're believing" and more "this is the play we're running, you in?" it's this participatory aspect that makes it so powerful.
One of the core purposes of right-wing media is to rewrite your memory and reprogram your moral response to an event you saw with your own eyes. George Floyd died of a heart attack. Jan 6 was a peaceful picnic. This process has already begun
THERE IS VIDEO

I really do not want to recommend to everyone a video of a person being shot but there is video from multiple angles

why not cut the crap and just publish "this paper supports random state murder, it makes us feel good, kill kill kill"? same exact meaning, less embarrassing

removal from app store + google play probably fatally wounds the entire global right wing movement and significantly hinders musk’s own ability to get involved with elections both here and abroad
Honestly think that if you pulled twitter from the App Store and shut it down it would fuck up the entire right wing ecosystem at that point. Like the entire media apparatus would fall apart.

I think it's sad that younger generations won't get to experience this
For Americans, Dick Clark was the personification of all the preceding year’s misfortunes and sorrows.
Each year a Dick Clark was chosen to be feasted and feted for the final week of December, until being sealed inside a ball by temple attendants for the sacrifice on the night of the 31st.

Good maxim to ring in the new year with, honestly.
Repeat after me:

I am not calmer than Kamala Harris.
I am not calmer than Karl Marx.
I am not calmer than Bailey Jay.
I am not calmer than Pope John XXIII.

But if I stand back and watch and learn,
I will be calmer than I am.

It's actually a kind of unusual moment in history, where women have so much autonomy that they can just choose not to date or marry a guy if they think he sucks, and also there's a huge cohort of men who are completely unprepared for having a partner whose opinion they have to consider.

I do think there is something kind of interesting about this, which this article never really gets at and which is at the heart of conservative complaints about feminism, and it is that this problem is driven exclusively by women being allowed to have opinions.

Everyone has a list of so-called "red flags" when they're dating. And for some, especially younger Americans, different political views is a relationship deal breaker.
