Fun fact: In the eyes of the state, we're all simply "at-large" individuals until we abolish this bullshit.
ICE is moving away from focusing on arresting migrants at local jails to tracking them down in communities as the Trump administration presses to increase deportations, a Post analysis found.

The result: a huge surge of at-large arrests.
ICE shift in tactics leads to soaring number of at-large arrests, data shows

Yeah, it’s weird that the response to a blockbuster series that doesn’t create a rabid obnoxious omnipresent fandom is effectively: where is the rabid obnoxious omnipresent fandom?

Like, what, that’s desirable?

Microsoft, even more than most companies, comes off as if they’re legit mad for having to deal with us in order to get to our money.
Xbox had a terrible 2025: Microsoft canceled games and raised console and Game Pass prices, Costco stopped selling Xbox, and Valve's Steam Machine upstaged it (Devindra Hardawar/Engadget)

It's crazy how much industry in the US is simply profiting off of the government's work. A huge amount of pharmaceuticals are created from Gov research, for example. And here, an entire industry exists entirely because the Gov maintains the scaffolding.

This isn't waste. It's good, actually.
The rate of return here is crazy: for a few hundred thousand dollars, this lab produces literally billions of oysters and supports a seafood industry worth hundreds of millions. And the Trump administration is just like "fuck all that, it's wasteful spending, you're fired"

They really have no idea. The External Active Thermal Control System (EATCS) on the ISS has huge radiators but can only remove a maximum of about 240,000 BTU (about 70KW) worth of heat from the complex per hour. Data centers generate waste heat in the megawatt-hour range (tens to hundreds).

CIOs about to have a big budget problem as all their hardware costs are about to massively inflate (cloud provider’s cost will too, will they’ll pass on).

Their solution is probably going to be sexy GenAI projects to “save money”.. lots of funneling money and jobs into a furnace basically.
The memory shortage is the result of corporate greed and the lack of regulations around tech monopolies. Three companies effectively control the global memory supply. One of them has just decided to stop selling to consumers entirely and OpenAI is eating up 40% of RAM production from the other two.

a type of content that makes me want to launch myself into space and is huge part of why everything is so bad: TikToker goes down a “rabbit hole,” makes 9-minute video. The “rabbit hole” was she found an Eater article. The Eater journalist did all the work: www.tiktok.com/t/ZTruBS8cp/

Yep. I have a term for it.

Used in this way, "some say" and "critics say" are signals warning us that what comes next is not truth-seeking but refuge-seeking behavior.

"Depends on you ask" operates in similar fashion.
A common dodge here seems to be to use the framing of "some say", which allows you to pretend you are being objective. Even then, the actual correct terminology might not even be used. "Some say prisoners are being interrogated in ways that could be considered unethical."

Just a friendly reminder as we go into the holidays:

Folks don't have to explain to you why they don't drink.

If you offer them a drink and they decline, don't ask them why. It's not your business.

Just offer them something without alcohol to drink instead. And move on.

I once knew a Federal bank examiner, and one time someone asked him why we had to KEEP inspecting banks over and over. He basically said every new batch of business school grads invents bank fraud from first principles.

The underlying cause of every bubble - debt masquerading as financial innovation - depends on not just short financial memory & speculative neophytism, but reinventing jargon of finance, like how each generation of kids has new ways to say same things.

You really gotta follow up on an underspecified claim like “we found 186k dead people.”

People die every day, and the government is always going to be some amount behind in working out the administrative consequences, but that doesn’t mean the deceased’s EBT accounts were somehow used for fraud.
Brooke Rollins: "SNAP is a broken program. SNAP is full of corruption. We found 186,000 dead people."

People think "politics" is what you say, but politics is in fact how you wield power. In that sense, driving a car is one of the most profound ways to reveal what your actual politics are.

How people drive reveals the sickness at the heart of our society: wanting power, but not responsibility.
It just needs to be way easier to lose your license and your car for reckless driving, because a few months of major societal disruption 5 years ago taught people that driving in such a way that kills others or themselves is nbd
so uhhhhh is anyone going to do anything about the epidemic of drivers just blasting through red lights these days? @timdonnelly.com investigates: nygroove.nyc/why-does-no-...

This is actually a pretty perfect encapsulation of the abject media failure that got us here: a prolific sexual predator who had close connections to the country's most powerful people is "a guy" and a two-time president is just "somebody" so the things they said about each other aren't newsworthy.
The emails that you’re seeing now are news in themselves, but that’s because of how they’re coming out—a congressional committee released them—& the context in which they’re being viewed. A guy emailing a reporter talking about old girlfriends or saying someone is “dirty” is not a whole news story.
