My complex social media policy

Follow: you post stuff I want to see

Block: you post stuff I actively dislike and do not want to see

Mute: I'm not interested but lots of people quote you (and that's fine)

None of the above: you're mostly harmless or I don't know you.

:)
My first go at a proper hollow form, turned from spalted beech. Too thick in the base, opening too wide, but I'm really pleased with how the hollowing went and the shape is please, needs finishing up yet, but making good progress.

This is amazing but missing alt text, so I'll do a thread with detailed alt text for each of the three pictures.

Split Fiction is fun - slightly more stressful than Stardew Valley but nice to find another fun split-screen co-op. Myself and @randomwittering.bsky.social enjoyed being pigs :)

One of the wickedest things Wes Streeting has ever done is push politically convenient falsehoods about suicide rates amongst young trans people. We have new data from the National Child Mortality Database that exposes the truth he tried to cover up.

A freedom of information request by Good Law Project has found that deaths by suicide of trans young people under 18 surged following the withdrawal of gender-affirming healthcare

Need a knitters help.

Knitting a hat but doing it flat because circulars still baffle me. I’ve reached the section for decreases. I understand for the knit row but how would I reverse it for the purl row? 🧶

No joke: I got angry hate mail today for writing an obituary of a Black woman scientist—because the person felt she did didn’t deserve the recognition.

Which just makes me want to share it again: www.nature.com/articles/d41...

She made key contributions to US cold-war science despite facing huge barriers as a Black woman.

“But we lost all those girls.”

I think about this a lot—but unsurprisingly, Seanan puts the perfect words around it.

::cries in comics… and games… and movies… and books… and apparently everywhere else, also::
"We would have lost so much if we'd driven him away" is the justification.

But we lost all those girls. We lost the women they would have become. We lost the work they would have done. Why was his future work so much more valuable than theirs?

I mean, we all know why.

It's still a part of every conversation and every discussion of systemic sexism. But this keeps happening, in every industry, in every setting, and we keep siding with the men. "Oh she was too pretty, she was a temptation." "Oh she made him do it." "Oh she was at fault."

The thing about the Epstein files (and Mandelson scandal) is it makes you wonder what is/was going on in all the messages between those in power that we can't see. Epstein may have been a monster, but this is surely barely the tip of the iceberg.

This.

As I said before the third worst thing about LLMs is poisoning the AI well for everything else.
I know it’s intentional but we should stop calling everything AI, lumping useful machine learning techniques for science with large language models that tech companies are trying to cram into everything.
AI to track icebergs adrift at sea.

British scientists say a world-first AI tool to catalogue and track icebergs as they break apart into smaller chunks could fill a "major blind spot" in predicting climate change

What a weird world.

The Nintendo Switch is the best selling Nintendo console ever, despite low expectations.
Also
The Switch 2 probably won't sell as many as they'd like it to.
