One of the reasons I so greatly dislike the “can men and women be friends?” nonsense (yes, full stop, shut up) is that it casts suspicion on people with opposite-sex friends instead of where it more often belongs: on people with no opposite-sex friends.
Anyway, yeah. The overwhelming impression one gets from so many of these emails is that a lot of them are guys who have never had a real, serious friendship with a woman in their lives.

Which sucks for them, but also sucks for every woman who has to deal with them, ever.

“But we lost all those girls.”

I think about this a lot—but unsurprisingly, Seanan puts the perfect words around it.

::cries in comics… and games… and movies… and books… and apparently everywhere else, also::
"We would have lost so much if we'd driven him away" is the justification.

But we lost all those girls. We lost the women they would have become. We lost the work they would have done. Why was his future work so much more valuable than theirs?

The predictably excellent @brennanleemulligan.bsky.social is on here right now, and he’s matching donations for Minnesota. I’m in for $100–if you’ve got anything to spare, join in!
For those who can, here are links to donate directly to local efforts on the ground resisting ICE's terrorizing of Minneapolis. Let me know what you donated to where, and I'll match it until I get a panicked call from my bank!

I can’t stop thinking about him.

Credit for Spider-Man goes to Stan Lee and Steve Ditko—respectively, the child and grandchild of immigrants.

Community support recommendation from a local friend: check standwithminnesota.com for good places to donate.

“Always treat your collaborators well, but especially when they're doing mission critical work that doesn't come with much credit or visibility.”
^^^

Gold standard advice from Jim Zub (in reference to comics, here, but of course: applicable everywhere)

And notice that pattern - Assistant Editors gain experience and become Editors. They remember who they've worked with and how they were treated.

Always treat your collaborators well, but especially when they're doing mission critical work that doesn't come with much credit or visibility.

Oh dang I love that bit of Greek mythology, the tale of Castor and Castor and Castor and Castor and Castor and Castor and Pollux
Castor, one of the stars marking Gemini's twins — and one of the brightest in the sky — is actually a sextuple star, a *six*-star system! Now, for the first time, astronomers have split some of those tightly bound stars.

My social media feed is full of people protecting their neighbors. Normally reserved Minnesotans screaming obscenities at lawless nazi ICE agents. And I keep thinking of the Mister Rogers quote, "Look for the helpers." My whole feed is helpers. Brave, foul-mouthed helpers.

Cyber Monday is here and deals are going fast! These deals are diaphanous. They are receding even as we speak, becoming mere memories of deals, prices longed for but lost, hints at what could have been had for less. A golden slant of sun through window falls on an empty countertop. Act now.
