"People didn't put politics in their gaming in the old days".

The year is 1969, a 25 year old Jim Dunnigan designs the wargame "Up Against the Wall, Motherf*****", a game about the student demonstrations at Columbia. One player plays the Administration and the other the Radicals.

We've been invited to a New Year's Eve dinner party, and the host has asked if we could "bring some games".

Did the United States really spend trillions of dollars on winning the Cold War, only for its president in 2025 take orders from a Russian dictator?

This is an earth-shattering humiliation for America of which its reputation may never recover.

Massive longshot: in the early 2000s, as you drove into the Suffolk village of Dunwich, there was a road sign (red triangle) warning of toads crossing. Do you have a picture of it that you're willing to share? The one I took has gone missing.

The most important post on Bluesky today
Just watched the new Knives Out and I think it's really important you know that the scene in the Seminary's Gym is filmed in the same place Rick Astley filmed the music video for Never Gonna Give You Up.

I saw the window tracery and immediately made my friends pause the film so I could tell them.

Remember:

When Tylenol was poisoned *by an outsider* and killed people, the company recalled all their products & redesigned them.

When Intel’s Pentium had a bug so obscure it affected 1 in _9 billion_ long division calculations, they recalled their chips.

ChatGPT was made deadly *by its team*.
i don’t see how any of the benefits of chatgpt and other consumer-facing LLMs can possibly outweigh their incredible ability to induce suicides
Adam Raine’s life hurtled toward tragedy soon after he began talking with ChatGPT about homework. Analysis of his ChatGPT account shows how the chatbot became a confidant as he planned to end his life.

2001: A Space Odyssey still looks utterly convincing. Knowing how the magic was done doesn't stop it being magic.

The Room in the Tower, this year's ghost story for Christmas, was admirable right up to Gatiss's usual last-minute monster, which was unnecessary and rather spoiled it.

What a treat--a whole evening of Ghost Stories for Christmas on BBC4: Woman of Stone, Lot No. 249, Count Magnus, The Mezzotint, Whistle and I'll Come To You, and Top of the Pops Christmas 1978, with Noel Edmunds presenting Boney M, the Bee Gees and Showaddywaddy.
