we are due for a new round of one of my favorite genres of film: republican elected officials getting screamed at by constituents
Alabama Republican Barry Moore held a town hall and said migrants are not allowed due process. His constituents heckled him, chanting “shame, shame” as the coward made his hasty exit.

If you work in journalism: you cannot use machine learning to upscale a photo and still be telling the truth. It WILL lie, even if you don't intend to tell one.

It can only do what it does by inventing details where none exist, which means it will inherently be misrepresenting reality.
Unfriendly reminder, AI is being used to destroy trust. Do not normalize the use of AI. AI can not reliably enhance videos or low-quality images.

This is the quiet replacement of reality. Do not let this be normalized.

Maine--also under an ICE surge--has an undocumented population of about 5,000 people & the nation's lowest rate of violent crime. Because they can't find "the worst of the worst," they're primarily detaining people w/ legal status & no criminal record. This isn't about immigration.

If DeWine supports Haitians in Ohio, it’s time for him to consult his god, understand he will never be president but he can be defender of free people and America in a way most presidents will never be, and do everything in his power to keep the ravenous monsters who run his party out of his state
DeWine has been a big supporter of the Haitian immigrants in Springfield. He has provided funds for support services and housing improvements all along. He is a traditional Catholic along the lines of the current Pope and emphasizes charity. He is also from a neighboring town to Springfield.

so to be clear a canadian nazi failson successfully directed the ethnic cleansing of a not very large town in Ohio
These are the Haitians attacked by Vance in 2024 at the urging of Canadian neo-Nazi Geoff Martin, aka "Captive Dreamer," who he appears to follow closely.

They're currently here legally. The admin is abruptly making them illegal, then removing them in a 1940s-style militarized cleansing campaign.

Leading democratic politicians should make plans to be in Springfield on February 4th
I know all eyes are on Minneapolis, but there's a fast-approaching nightmare in Springfield, Ohio.

Trump is revoking protected status for tens of thousands of Haitians living there on Feb. 3.

Reportedly, on Feb. 4, 1000 ICE agents are arriving to remove this population. Ethnic cleansing.

The absolute *core* function of government is to protect folks from roving gangs of masked armed men unleashing wanton violence. But even with everything we know, Susan Collins stands on the side of the paramilitary -- not the folks desperate to be protected from it.

It's utter madness. #MEpolitics
Shattered glass sprayed across an infant by a federal paramilitary -- that's what's going on in Portland as Susan Collins does her damnedest to funnel more $$$ to ICE. (Even as other Republicans draw a line in the sand).

Obscene and irredeemable. tinyurl.com/mr2eexjz #MEpolitics

the sheer lack of basic humanity triggering the judge having to specifically require this
This judge says:
- refugees must be released in the next 5 days
- Returned to Minnesota. Not released onto the streets of Texas, which is what's been happening.
- ICE must alert the refugees' lawyers so they aren't released into dangerous cold without someone to meet them
REAKING: A federal judge in Minnesota has barred the Trump administration from arresting / detaining the state's 5,600 refugees while they await lawful permanent resident status. storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

This can all be reduced to: STEM is Chad and how you get Job and Money and thus Virtue, while humanities are feminine and gay. It is the lie they use to create cheap labor, social disconnection, and eventually anger that they can mold into violence - all in service of the Owners. Which ain't you.
The U.S. has successfully convinced its people that “the humanities are frivolous and STEM is Important and Real” is basically a law of nature: this is absolute nonsense that we should stop putting up with.

I agree.

As a researcher, one of the most important skills is being able to write and speak coherently. No matter how interesting your results are, they don't matter if you can't communicate them.

Also, the ONLY good campus service roles I have ever had involved International Education.
I should also note that I am someone who has humanities degrees and who *also* has ended up really enjoying doing a lot of STEM-Type-Work professionally: I’m a big fan of both.

And I refuse to play along with the idea that one is superior to the other.
I agree that it’s high fucking time that we stopped acting like we need to grovel and constantly justify the existence of some of our most incredibly elemental and ancient human pursuits.

Bondi thinks she's going to win the propaganda war with this shit, but it's never been more clear that they're losing.

Much like the Gaza ceasefire, the Minneapolis withdrawal is just words. Nothing has really changed. Keep it up minnesota, we stand with you.
Very little if anything seems to have changed on the ground. ICE is still out there terrorizing neighborhoods and trying to disappear neighbors. None of us on the ground are buying this bullshit. We will keep organizing and fighting.
The intense fallout from the killing of Alex Pretti has forced President Trump to publicly change course in Minneapolis.

Listen to our White House reporters discuss the changes on today's episode of "The Daily."
