The students I work with and people in my community are diverse and many, including my spouse, are not US citizens. All face varied risks and anxieties despite legal status.

If you are in Colorado, CORRN is one organization working to keep our community safe from CBP/ICE.
I've half heartedly wanted a 3D printer since I had access to one in high school. This moment makes me feel so incredibly jealous of all these fellow nerds ♥️
Okay, look, I wanna say something about this, because I know a lot of people are like "oh look the weird nerds are having a Day" and yes, we are.

But this is not really about 3D printing so much as it is about community.

See my response to that comment above
Yes! There's a lot of nuance here, but there are meaningful differences.

First, "generative" is referring to very different mechanisms. Noise or aleatoric composition are different mechanisms than Sora and produce different results.

But, the distinguishing factor here is that this stripping away can serve to turn back attention to the artist and the statement they are making.
January 31, 2026 at 10:49 PM
There is *a lot* of nuance here, and the perspective you are coming from seems analogous to how I would approach genres like noise that strip out recognizable elements of skill or artistry.
January 31, 2026 at 10:49 PM
For example, you'll notice that Tim did not make any direct mention to any identifiable person or artist in his post. We are already talking about a mode in which the human role has been erased.

That's why I said "minimizes" and not something stronger in an earlier comment. I don't intend to say strictly that AI cannot be used to make art but rather to comment on the general trend.

AI generated music does not necessarily totally exclude context and that process of creation, but it minimizes it.
January 31, 2026 at 8:32 PM
In part from the perspective of musicians and jobs but also from the perspective that creators and context imbue art with meaning.

Any time I engage with music more than shallowly, the context and people involved in creating the music become a part of my appreciation.
January 31, 2026 at 8:32 PM
I make decisions about who I listen to all the time, and I frequently avoid musicians who are misogynists, fascists, or otherwise repugnant.

Obviously, these are more poignant examples and a different category than Suno but the general trend is the same.
January 31, 2026 at 8:05 PM
If your intent is more that *you like* the music or that the music *is likable*, that sort of incongruence between an artifact in isolation and its context is honestly super common and not harmful or unique to AI.
January 31, 2026 at 8:05 PM
The music industry is chock full of distasteful shit and also full of beautiful and interesting people and music... that's sort of why I have little interest in Suno and AI music.
January 31, 2026 at 8:05 PM
I think to have an appreciation or taste for music a person should also care about the context and people who create that music.

Do you follow musicians who aren't wealthy or highly successful? I think if you did, you would see that the opinion you are expressing is really deeply offensive.

DHS/Police/Military/Surveillance = Infinite money hack

Probably how I should have ended the thread on what will shape the US market

That, and some industrial uses maybe will survive

Also, interest in hearing more about the ICE Parrot purchases.
January 30, 2026 at 11:08 PM
And, per your other comment... Continuing access to journalists otherwise down to changes in access and restrictions on DJI products... the *completely distinct* customs restrictions on DJI products being paused presumably improves access in the short term but who knows 🤷‍♂️
It’s been really hard to acquire DJI drones for the last year or so due to customs issues - I need to sit down and ask around about the extent to which that’s improved.
January 30, 2026 at 11:04 PM
Question for you: Are any of these Blue-UAS systems (e.g. Parrot) going to be usable outside that space e.g. by videographers or journalists?
January 30, 2026 at 11:04 PM
Good points---and I wrote and ended that thread a bit abruptly---restrictions on components were walked back and primarily to facilitate police/surveillance/military applications.
January 30, 2026 at 11:04 PM
Impacts of import restrictions are hard to pin down now because---like the tariffs---these are a moving target. Decline in accessibility of drones for journalism, to hobbyists, etc. may be slow (bans scheduled to hit in the future or on new models)

But we can expect:
Less resources ➡️ Less access
