There’s a very surreal conversation I keep having on here where people seem unable to hold two ideas at the same time, and I’m not sure why. It’s simply true that the Big AI platforms like ChatGPT are:
1. Extremely bad for society, in many ways.
2. Very genuinely popular with lots of people.

That's just secret police. They're doing secret police.
NEW: a contractor is paying random people $300 to physically track immigrants for ICE. They're given addresses, vehicles, told to monitor the target. That information then goes back up to ICE. These are not licensed private investigators; members of the public

And that would be the part we really really wouldn’t want him doing.
Larry Summers tells @theharvardcrimson.bsky.social
he’s stepping back from all public commitments in light of his messages with Epstein, saying he is “deeply ashamed” and hopes “to rebuild trust and repair relationships.”

He will continue teaching.

THIS IS BIG

For non-academics who might not understand why:
1. Sen. Warren is still a Harvard professor so this is a call coming from inside the house
2. As a tenured law prof, Warren knows it is a VERY big deal from a labor standpoint to call on Harvard to ignore tenure. The bar for this is HIGH.
Per CNN, Elizabeth Warren is calling on Harvard to cut ties with Larry Summers after Jeffrey Epstein's emails released last week by House Dems featured Summers making sexist comments + asking for Epstein’s romantic advice.

Been seeing and hearing a lot of discourse about Peter Thiel's Antichrist lectures, and my hot take is that a lot of people are over-indexing on how bad and weird his theology or historicity is versus inspecting how he fits into the Non-Denominational and Evangelical milieu.

Remember the recent middle-of-the-night apartment building raid where children were dragged outside naked & zip-tied in the street while black & Latino residents were _sorted by race_ and piled into separate vans while their apartments were ransacked & robbed? That raid? So it resulted in 0 arrests.

No quarter for faculty and teachers who prey on their students.
Larry Summers needs to resign or be pushed out of Harvard. This is absolutely unacceptable.
The emails have Summers reporting to Epstein about his attempts to date a Harvard economics student & to hit on her during a seminar she was giving.

Reasons I'm not in Texas.

I teach courses on AI and a course involving robot sensing and perception.

But, technology has politics, and my teaching reflects that.
The new rules require presidential approval for courses that "advocate" race or gender ideology and ban material outside approved syllabi. Students can use a hotline to report course content. bit.ly/3XxszrC

A bad thing is unfolding at NIH this week: It looks like the Trump administration is trying to replace key civil servant scientific leaders, the Institute Directors, with political hires. These directors control the NIH budget, tens of billions.

Earnest post: there is increasingly direct evidence that Trump participated in child sex trafficking or at least knew about it.

He should resign, be impeached and removed from office, and prosecuted.

Even if you don’t think that WILL happen it’s important to say publicly that it SHOULD happen.

And not like, the kind of milquetoast centrist Democrats we've been told are the only kind of people who can win.

I'll add a little nuance to this, though I do understand this point: people don't often understand what they're doing when they subscribe to a blocklist. The mental model of how blocklists work is often fundamentally incorrect, and grants far more power to maintainers than they intend.
the anti blocklist discourse always devolves into people either yelling or passive aggressively hrmphing YOU SHOULD LET ME INTO YOUR HOUSE and

no?

i dont have to.

i dont have to explain why.

if i fuck up and miss something i would have liked to know that's on me! im an adult!

Blocking hatemongers is one thing but this trend of using mass block lists to avoid hearing from people who might or might not hold points of view you expect to disagree with is unhealthy imo and hurts the platform.

Bluesky was better off with folks like Margaret Mitchell and Giada Pistilli on it.
