The other thing about normalizing gAI use in higher ed is that we are teaching our students that they cannot trust their own creativity, their own thoughts and brains, their own skills without having it reshaped/shellacked/transmogrified by LLMs. We’re setting them up for failure and dependence.

RIP Claudia Cardinale. Much like Robert Redford, she was a rare case of a beautiful performer with a filmography full of bangers who did NOT become right-wing later in life. Here she is punching fascist Brigitte Bardot in the face in Les Pétroleuses (1971).

Nah, let that bitch's reputation go down in flames like her soul in hell. However, trashing Bardot without giving people vintage replacement baddies is just rude. Like, can we talk about Jayne Mansfield real quick?

I am founding a not-for-profit website where independent comic creators and small publishers can easily sell their works to libraries, plus provide other services. Called (for now) the Comics Librarian Commons, this will be an online hub bringing independent creators and librarians together.

Shigeru Mizuki's THE DEFINITIVE YOKAI FIELD GUIDE is coming to English this April!

The was a personal request by Mizuki to have translated--the last such request he made. He felt it was the culmination of his work as an educator on Yokai.

I saw Inoue and Picasso were having a boxing match and I somewhat disappointed that it isn't the artists fighting haha.

Mary Shelley doesn't get enough credit for not only anticipating the silver-spooned narcissist techbro who recklessly creates technology without thinking through the consequences, but also for knowing that said techbro would be an absolutely terrible father.

What a crazy year it’s been. I don’t remember being that busy ever. Many bad things happened but also lots of good stuff. Guess that’s just how life is.

Artist John Celardo was born OTD in 1918. His long career saw him bouncing between comic strips (TARZAN, GREEN BERETS), comic books (including inking for DC) and advertising, but I'll recall his many tales for Gold Key, where he clearly loved drawing monsters. He died in 2012.

Be a decent sociable person, first and foremost.

Don't look at interactions as transactional contests you use for career gain and status.
Talking to one of these types at a con who asked how I 'got in' with so many 'famous writers' who I'd been talking to and I said "we made friends before anyone knew who we were decades ago by striking up interesting conversations and enjoying each other's company" and he kept re-asking the question.
They have come to the convention hoping to "break in" and then find themselves -- shocker! -- a "nobody in the book world." Yeah no shit! We all are! I have gently told guys like this a million times that it takes most of us *years* of hard work but they do not believe that could be true for them. +

I will be repeating this advice (or my version of it) for the rest of my life, as a personal crusade.

There is no such thing as networking. There is making friends. And you can be genuine and kind… or transactional and worthless.

Be genuine and kind.

Great thread from Jim.
