From 1987 until 2004 I was a professional film critic for radio. I'd like to start a YouTube channel dedicated to obscure cinema but need the start-up hardware, and I'm on a fixed disability income. Thank you for donating; it means everything to me! gofund.me/4493e39f8

Happy Super Bowl Sunday from your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man!

ASM #153's "The Longest Hundred Yards" was one of writer Len Wein's favorites, though he would laugh and say it allowed him to indulge his penchant for "sloppy sentimentality." Art by the legendary Ross Andru, cover by Gil Kane.

It was 58 years ago today Marvel published CAPTAIN MARVEL #1, from Roy Thomas & Gene Colan. Resplendent in green & white, he'd eventually get a sleek 70s makeover (and silver tresses), and in the 80s know a painfully poignant death from cancer. Mar-Vell, we salute you.

Happy Super Bowl Sunday from Warren Magazines.

Editor Louise Jones (Simonson) tried "All Sports" issues for 1976-77 thinking male readers liked sportsball, but sales were meh. Most of the stories were drawn by Carmine Infantino, who hated Warren's predilection for nudity and gore, but absent here.

The first Super Bowl was played in 1967, but it took a decade of them before TV GUIDE considered it of enough importance to highlight it on the cover. This 1977 is their first; for a number of years it was an annual issue, but then mid-80s it disappeared again. Art by Roland Michaud.

Who says football can't be moody? A truly ominous 1981 TV GUIDE cover for Super Bowl XV from acclaimed artist Brad Holland. The artwork certainly seemed familiar at the moment; TIME had recently selected him to do the 1979 Man of the Year cover of Ayatollah Khomeini.

Super Bowl XII in 1978 was the first to be played in prime time, as well as the first in a dome; it's a transformative year in producing the annual ritual we have today. What artist did TV GUIDE choose to render the first night game? None other than the legendary Charles Addams.

If the previous year was Metal, in 1980 TV GUIDE would opt for Wood to promote Super Bowl XIV. Artist Nick Fasciano (still with us at 85) designed the album jackets for the band Chicago, always changing but with the same logo.

1982 is the last in the run of Super Bowl illustrations for TV GUIDE until they return in the 90s. This is by Jim Sharpe, a regular at the magazine and at TIME. His May 1977 illustration of Menachem Begin is on one of the most collectable issues. Why? Within is the review of STAR WARS.

Strong ROLLERBALL vibes from the TV GUIDE Super Bowl XIII cover in 1979, created by Italian designer/sculptor George Giusti, whose bold, striking work was a fixture over at HOLIDAY Magazine. He would often work in metal to achieve a science fictional effect.

Correcting the auto-correct: It's Lakota, not Dakota.
Gold Key released THE OCCULT FILES OF DOCTOR SPEKTOR #1 OTD in 1973. A creation of Don Glut & Jesse Santos, the title character investigated supernatural shenanigans with his assistant Dakota Rainflower, with an emphasis on confronting the Universal monsters. A wonderful title that lasted 25 issues.

We lost the iconic Burt Bacharach OTD in 2023. The legendary composer and musician - recipient of six Grammys and three Oscars, among a plethora of other awards - was 94.

Happy 85th birthday to the magnificent Nick Nolte, one of Hollywood's great Bad Boys, and an actor of extraordinary range. Unquestionably one of my faves...

NYT confirming MS NOW reporting:

Prosecutors began investigating Renee Good's killing, then Washington told them to stop.

Federal prosecutors had a warrant to collect evidence from Good's vehicle, but Trump leaders said to drop it. About a dozen prosecutors have since departed.

Clout chasers truly don’t realize, or don’t care, that they are one of the MAJOR disseminators of propaganda and misinformation. That they’re playing into the hands of fascists. That their selfishness is a danger to us all.
This is a fake Trump post, and the account that posted it here has been told repeatedly that it's a fake Trump post but still has it up.

That's an easy block.

The great @jkbjournalist.bsky.social with another big scoop - DOJ has a list of people who may have committed crimes with Epstein - and Trump is on that list.

"Epstein class."

Perfect.
Ossoff: We were told that MAGA was for working-class Americans. But this is a government of, by, and for the ultra-rich. It’s the wealthiest Cabinet ever. This is the Epstein class. They are the elites they pretend to hate.

Remembering actor/writer Nick Adams, born OTD in 1931. He created the ABC series THE REBEL, canceled by the network after two seasons despite high ratings. Hoped for a Steve McQueen-like career and was disappointed doing Japanese SF & horror. His OD at 36 raised questions: accidental or intentional?
