The inimitable team of Aronofsky and Handel (Black Swan), joined by Welch (Bet Your Life) in his graphic novel debut, partner their writing acumen with stellar art from Morazzo and O'Halloran (Ice Cream Man) for this page-turning sci-fi thriller with just a touch of dark humor. Duke is an egocentric and powerful billionaire who amassed his fortune in the chicken industry. Just before he succumbs to illness, he has himself frozen and awakens in a terrifyingly confusing world of bizarre creatures where he and his fellow survivors are held in a "Zo0." With all of his wealth and power gone, he fixates on his one remaining goal: escape and reunite with his last remaining family member. Morazzo and O'Halloran's art is a colorful smorgasbord on every page, excelling at scenery and elevating the intricacy, the bizarre, and the brutality of this world as well as Duke's emotional journey. The dialogue and Duke's narration, with exaggerated, folksy Southern expressions throughout, ground the impossibility of this otherworldly story. Duke is a prime example of an unlikable character, the creators daring the reader not to feel emotionally invested in him. With the weighty themes of immortality, life priorities, legacy, and some full-frontal nudity, this book is best for adult fans of sci-fi works like Ultrasound, who will be eager for the next volume.

Everything is really scary and horrible, and on the utter flipside, we made these really adorable valentines.
