Evil. Really, quite evil. Incessant reader. A steady supply of novels keeps me from running amok, so: yea, libraries. Dislikes quite a large swath of humanity.

It’s #NationalSnowdropDay! Snowdrops, also known by the botanical name Galanthus, are one of the first plants to flower in the new year.

‘Drifts’ of snowdrops make for spectacular photos. Like this display at The Weir Garden, Herefordshire.

John Ruskin was born on this day in 1819.

Ruskin was one of the most influential writers on art and architecture in 19th-century Britain.

The use of colour in art was important to Ruskin. He believed that the colours of the natural world could inspire and guide artists.

Picked this book on Lebanese baking today. It contains both traditional recipes and little twists on tradition (zaatar garlic knots?)

I’ll bake from it for the superbowl tomorrow.

Let's talk about the time that an 18 YEAR OLD invented the COLOR MAUVE (I am not kidding) and completely revolutionized textiles, fashion & eventually cancer diagnosis.

The teenager was William Henry Perkin, a bit of a prodigy, who at 15 began studying with August Wilhelm von Hofmann at ICL.
William Henry Perkin
In 1856 Perkin accidentally discovered mauvine—the first commercialized synthetic dye—and introduced a new era in the chemical industry.

Without naming your job, tell me something you say over and over again at work.

Either

“What exactly are you hoping to get out of this?”

Or

“Stop, stop! Just change one tiny thing at a time!”
Without naming your job, tell me something you say over and over again at work.

“You need to go deeper”
Without naming your job, tell me something you say over and over again at work.

“the Epstein class” should be THE tagline tbh. it’s so accurate their only defense is redactions, and it captures a hundred different linked evils at once. it also perfectly clarifies why trying to distinguish btw “kitchen table issues” (ie money) and “identity politics” (ie misogyny) is impossible
Ossoff: We were told that MAGA was for working-class Americans. But this is a government of, by, and for the ultra-rich. It’s the wealthiest Cabinet ever. This is the Epstein class. They are the elites they pretend to hate.

I AM SUCH AN EVANGELIST FOR THIS BOOK I LEARNED SO MUCH
@clairewillett.bsky.social recommended a fantastic book a while back called Extreme North that does an excellent job of walking the reader through generations of people who fetishize Scandinavian history & culture and white supremacism. It was one of the most fascinating books I read last year.

And I keep thinking how cheaply the academic/literary world can be bought. Brockman got $850,000 from Epstein over 17 years: $50,000 a year to be his intellectual pimp.
Been thinking a bit about the way that John Brockman acted as Epstein's scientist collector and would organize dinners where Epstein would just happen to show up and I think a lesson here for *white scientists* is if you're being invited to all-white events, that might be actively intentional 🧪
