This is an excellent analogy, because my recollection from grade school is that the pen on the right looks fun and exciting, and then you play with it for a few minutes and realize it's not actually useful for anything and in fact makes some tasks more cumbersome, and never think about it again.
yeah, just out of interest, how many people choose the pen on the right for real work or art? See a lot of them in professional workplaces, do you?

This ties into my biggest recommendation for people who aren't used to driving in snow:
If at all possible, keep your hands loose on the steering wheel. You want to be able to clearly feel what your car wants to do and gently steer it into what you want it to do.

IF YOU MUST DRIVE drive slowly and give all the other cars as much space as possible. Avoid sudden changes to the velocity vector of your car - if you must change direction, do so slowly; if you must stop or accelerate, do so gradually. DO NOT slam on your brakes if you can avoid it.

I really think that lack of empathy is critical element for right-wing thought. They can't imagine how other people might think or feel, so they just assume everybody else is like them. That's where "every accusation is a confession" comes from. "We'd do it, so the Democrats must also be doing it!"
A big part of the current right wing belief system is that everyone is actually just as bigoted as they are, and are only pretending not to be as a public performance ("virtue signalling").
They genuinely thought once they started doing open racism, everyone would join in
