Books, cathedrals, swimming in lakes, cooking, politics. Cat-lover sadly cursed by allergies.
I came downstairs this morning to discover that the teens had been doing mysterious late-night calculations. And possibly spilling them out of a glass. Have they been imbibing mathematics in some strange late-night ritual? It's half-term, so I won't find out until they get out of bed at around 2pm.

UK folks: if we care about what is happening in the US with ICE, we must take steps to push back against anti-immigrant and refugee policy by our own government.

Fill out this consultation. It really doesn't take long. Amnesty have put together a super clear and helpful guide to follow.

I was sad because a few weeks ago I had planned to make marmalade but my oranges went mouldy and all the shops had stopped stocking Seville oranges. But a lovely colleague found some and passed a bag on to me!

I'm reading a romance novel in which the hot rich businessman who has to get married or lose control of the family business is a stained glass magnate, and I want to live in a world where not only does everyone find true love but also where stained glass is a big money spinner.

Congratulations to Sociology.
I do want to shout-out my fellow sociologists, who have collectively created a discipline so woke that not a single one of our introductory textbooks can make it past Florida's censors.

Great work everyone.

this is really easy with the guide -- some people are saying 30 minutes but it didn't even take me that long. guide is particularly useful for the questions that are obviously leading/loaded, it just tells you not to bother answering them.
The UK government is proposing radical and punitive changes to settlement rules. This is settlement, not citizenship. The consultation is open until 12 February; please respond to it and oppose these evil proposals. Amnesty have a good guide: www.amnesty.org.uk/resources/gu...

I think that I will never stop being irritated by the bother/rather rhyme in "On the Street Where You Live" from My Fair Lady, a musical where pronunciation of English accents is a huge part of the plot.

All breaking news is learned by seeing an out of context post at the top of the page and trying to make sense of it when you can only focus with one eye and can't decide whether you need to piss badly enough to have to get up yet.

This makes me so sad when I compare it to the RBS "The People's Money" banknotes which make functional design into beautiful pieces of pocket art and were designed by Scottish creatives to tell meaningful local stories.
NEW: Glasgow City Council has just approved a massive AI-generated mural to be painted in the city centre.

The illustration of Scottish elements inexplicably contains a bald eagle.

The planner says those upset about it are "keyboard warriors" who should "calm down"

My expectations for this were high because Secret Byrd was so good, but this was possibly even better: powerful, moving and beautiful. Avoid the restricted view seats, because the view was restricted to the extent that I couldn't always tell who was on stage.

I'm old enough to have grown up in a time when standing against Naziism was patriotic and pre-ghost Ebeneezer Scrooge wasn't an aspirational role model.
Ukip have submitted a new logo and slogan to the Electoral Commission, swapping the £ pound sterling symbol for a cross, that looks very much like it is modelled on the Iron Cross used by Prussia & Germany 1871-1918 and Hitler's Nazi regime from 1933-45

When I was into modern paganism I mostly ended up hanging out with a lot of queer anarchists and learning more about consensus decision-making, how to make events more accessible.
Guys, I was only *pretending* to be a white supremacist in order to be liked and trusted by white suprematists on an explicitly white supremacist dating site :)

I am not vegetarian. But up until recently, if I ate out, I would choose a vegetarian option because I prefer beans and tofu and vegetables and grains and cheese and yogurt to meat. Now I generally end up eating meat because the choice is between meat and fake meat that gives me stomach cramps.
The problem with impossible burgers is simple: the best veggie burgers all look and taste like veggie burgers, you can see bits of veggie in them, etc

The market for people who want to not eat meat, but pretend to, is tiny

This is why Beyond Meat is going bankrupt
