Books, cathedrals, swimming in lakes, cooking, politics. Cat-lover sadly cursed by allergies.
I cracked and made a passive aggressive flow chart to put on that bit of worksurface next to the kitchen sink where everyone leaves their dirty dishes.

A beautiful morning swim. Listen to the birdsong and the actual, literal wind in the willows.

I snapped this quickly earlier, and it seems a good thing to post while things are grim.

I started the day beautifully with a swim in the lake followed by a bacon roll before work.

Not My Cat is having a little snooze in a comfy chair. The cat is also now known as Sid, after Six Dinner Sid who Not My Cat clearly sees as a role model.

We have acquired a visiting cat who is Not Our Cat. Clearly someone's pet, with a glossy coat and very friendly and trusting, but we get visits several times a day, which I am very much enjoying, especially as Not Our Cat has not yet made me sneeze, itch or wheeze.

My daughter's first A-level is tomorrow, the Greece paper for ancient history, including the rise of Macedon. The Macedonian wine with Sunday lunch was mostly coincidental but I would be tempted to do themed exam meals were it not for her final exam, the drama paper on Sweeney Todd.

I had this hippy Danish book which obviously had a massive impact on me because I grew up to have children with a man who was the spitting image of the dad in the book.

I swam all through the bleakness of winter. Yesterday, the banks were so full of growth and life that it was astonishing, and having spent time recently lingering over each episode of Alex Andreou's Podyssey, I could easily imagine that I was walking where Demeter had just been.

The Organic Metal concert at York Minster last night. I wasn't sure what to expect, but it was beautiful and atmospheric.

Some nice signs and some really powerful and moving speakers at the demo in York today

I used to write my kids a letter from one of Santa's elves each Christmas, and Lumi the elf and her friends told about experiences that reflected what was going on in the children's lives. I just found my initial planning notes from 2020 and have been taken back to a strange time.

On Tuesday, I went to the Sherlock Holmes Imaginarium for a pick-me-up impulse buy, and it came in this ridiculously adorable bag. @sherlockholmesyork.bsky.social

Glowing in the morning sunshine. Also, it's very lovely to have morning daylight again!

I swam in a hole in the ice. For around two minutes. And then warmed up in a sauna and did it again. The ice clinking in the water sounded like bells.

I've been watching The Titchfield Thunderbolt, and towards the end of the film, a bishop turns up. He is wearing gaiters and also a distinctive hat with the brim attached to the crown with ribbon or tape, probably in a loop on each side. Do you know the name for this type of hat?

I saw lots of pictures of people's lovely Christmas dinner tables on actual Christmas, but I was too lazy to write the alt text for mine until today. A day and a half later and nearly all the grapes have been eaten.

Inevitably the day will come when I add icing sugar to my tofu and ruin a stir-fry. But today was not that day!

A gorgeous swim at Pool Bridge Farm, at sunset on the winter solstice

That's me out of #harkageddon for this year. The concert was lovely, though.

It's the second most stressful day off the year at work today, so I have brought my emotional support elf

After over a month of meal deal sandwiches, I've finally got my acct together enough to make a big salad for this week's lunches: roast squash and Brussels sprouts, puy lentils, feta and pomegranate seeds. I would have added sage but I don't have any.

As the winter nightfall gets earlier and earlier, I'm starting to really the brightly illuminated star that shines through my office window from dusk each day.

I don't enjoy adult fairground rides at all, but I have never grown out of my love of merry-go-rounds. They are cosy and reassuring, but also like stepping into a magical world where normal rules don't apply, just for a few minutes. This one, on my way home from work, calls to me every evening.
