Star Trek has some really dumb shit, but it's outweighed by how consistently *good* it can be in contrast

meanwhile, Star Wars feels like it's a coin toss on whether you're getting a fun space adventure or the dumbest thing you've ever seen
You ever think about just how handily Star Trek has won the Star Wars/Star Trek war? Turns out making a lot of good content is really hard!

It's a combination of a bunch of things, I think -- history is just moving faster in general -- but if you had to single out a culprit, it's got to be the internet & social media. It's never been more visible to everyone that the social order *could be otherwise*, that's it's essentially arbitrary.

Players are roleplaying in Fortnite to teach each other their rights when encountering ICE officials

“I would slip [the warrant] under the door, but there’s no space under the door,” the agent says.

The civilian pauses. “Well. Sounds like a personal problem.”

This is your take.

My take is that in the US, we often don't realize how horrific something that happens to Black men all the time is, until it starts happening to non-Black people.

Pointing out that 50K people are in ICE detention, but 200,000 Black people are in pretrial detention, works.
And one reason it is counterproductive in my opinion to make it is that there is a definite effort to ask us to ignore immigrants‘ situation because “Americans have it so bad and we don’t have capacity” and we need to reject that conservative rhetorical frame

Excellent thread. Always happy to see people engage with Lewis
A friend who teaches theology shared with me a post about CS Lewis's Mere Christianity, which discusses foundational Christian logic across denominations. It reminded me of Dale's tweet below, and I wanted to share some thoughts here regarding modesty and respectability, which are often hot topics.

My friend and fellow menswear writer Bruce Boyer is fond of saying that clothes are more important than most people think, but less important than fashion people think. I'm of the same mind. I'm of the same mind. I think it's perfectly fine to use clothing to communicate something about yourself.

Regarding behavior, there's a chapter on sexual morality that begins with one of the least popular Christian virtues: modesty. Here's what CS Lewis had to say:

I know very few people who think the cost of public transit is prohibitive.

It’s that public transit in the US is treated in most cities like the thing you slap on after the fact.

I do not drink because I have almost no tolerance for it anymore (one margarita is too much).

If you are hosting a party, I recommend also stocking:
-fancy ginger beer
-coconut water
-premium juices like lychee and guava
-apple cider with cinnamon
-Italian sodas
-sparkling water

Lots of options!

I think my biggest problem with the "vaccines cause autism" bullshit is that, even assuming they did (they don't, actually), neurodiversity is...good?

"Oh no, instead of polio and measles, people are cool and have new and different ways of thinking about things" is, uh, a really weird flex
