On Thanksgiving, the immigrant children held at the Dilley detention center gathered in the gym for what they thought was a holiday feast.

The kids salivated over a spread of turkey, sandwiches, pastries and pies, a family told me.

But the food wasn’t for detainees — it was for the staff.
On Nov. 16, a mental health counselor recorded in Kamilla’s medical records that her mother reported the girl had lost her appetite after being “served food that contained worms.” A week later, the couple said, children were told to gather in the gym for what they believed would be a Thanksgiving celebration. Excitement spread as families saw tables set with turkey, sandwiches, pastries and pies, they said. The children waited expectantly. But when a parent asked when the celebration would begin, Oksana said, staff told them the holiday meal was for employees, not detainees. The children, she said, watched despondently as the feast was packed away.

If I had found my marriage to be a trial of perseverance, a regular gauntlet of annoyances to be endured, then life with Stanley was a whole new magnitude of ordeal. The man’s habits were simply unbearable; from his daily pre-dawn exercise routine—fifty army-style press-ups on the living-room rug, each accompanied by an agricultural-sounding grunt—to his diet of the most anemic and flavourless vegetables—”best for a healthy bowel”—to his doting over the flea-laden, slack-jawed, rodent-faced canine—’Miss Pennywhistle’—with whom he shared his bed, everything he did seemed designed to pluck at my already taut nerves. I began to think that I might once again have to resort to the most drastic of actions, until I stumbled across a documentary on one of the lesser-known television channels, detailing the practice and efficacy of the ancient art of trepanning, how, by the careful placement of holes in the skull, the trepanee might find his behaviours and even personality permanently corrected. The very next day I ordered a brand new Black & Decker Cordless, with battery and ten-piece drill bit set—my first ever foray into the world of do-it-yourself—and began to make a plan. In a few hours Stanley and Miss Pennywhistle will settle down for the night and I—having honed my aim on Stanely’s decorative phrenology bust—will get to work on adjusting him, drillhole by drillhole. By morning I’m hoping he’ll be a brand new man.

Pam Bondi loves dogs. Always had them, one after another. She got involved with dog shelters and dog rescue, and once pulled off to the side of a busy road and got out of her car to chase down a stray. Another dog she helped was a Saint Bernard named Master Tank. She adopted him from a shelter after he was lost during Hurricane Katrina in 2005, not long after her own Saint Bernard had died. The story has been told but bears repeating. Master Tank belonged to Steve and Dorreen Couture and their grandson, who was 4, recovering from the murder-suicide of his parents and losing his dog during the storm. Bondi said the dog was a “walking skeleton” and “dying from heartworms” when she adopted him. The Coutures eventually tracked down Master Tank, but instead of giving him back, Bondi hired a lawyer, who accused the Coutures of abusing the dog, which Bondi had renamed Noah. “She lied,” Dorreen told a Palm Beach Post columnist years later. “My little grandson begged her to take the dog home, and she refused. She thought she would just wear us down. That we were unstable people and would just quit.” The case was settled out of court, with Bondi securing visitation rights, but she never did visit. She got another dog.
