it's always writing y'all hate that travels furthest and fastest here, same as anywhere else

Since I hit credits in Blue Prince, I’ve been hungry for something more kinetic. Eventually turned to Armored Core 6, which I’d only played ~12 hours. I’ve been replaying missions, toying around with AC builds, learning the game again. Love the crunchy, somewhat ethereal vibe and aesthetic, y’know?

pre-writing a devastating obituary for your enemy is god-tier hating of a kind you don’t often see anymore. renaissance haterism. beautiful stuff.
A Sharon Begley byline, almost 5 years after her death.

Upon hearing the news James Watson had died, a STAT reporter said in our Slack, "I wish I could read what Sharon would have written."

Incredible news: Sharon in fact did pre-write a Watson obit. And it is masterful and excoriating.

it sure seems like a lot of discipline and focus has permeated the left. really stunning to see huge swaths of people with very recent learned experience recognize destabilizing bait and to ignore it, while quietly acknowledging constructive criticism and building from that.

exercise: swap "AI psychosis" for "monomyth psychosis" because that seems to be the narrative leverage the bots default to in the process of destroying people. what does it mean that these machines produce the form over and over? what does it indicate about the cultural centrality of that template?

Regular reminder that if you want to talk about RPGs on Youtube, I’m running an indie RPG Youtuber mentorship over on the @chimerahearts.com’s Discord!
one thing I'd really like to see more of in TTRPG scenes is critics with specific and well-known tastes who review projects outside their own circles anyways. both because critics should strive to understand their own preferences, and because I want sharp critiques from non-target audiences

the story is always: they want us divided, and they have to try really hard to achieve that, because we’re drawn to each other
JD Vance claims that diversity weakens unions, as people end up distrusting each other and not organizing.

Let me tell you two menswear stories related to this claim. 🧵

my hot take is that the fantasy that’s being catered to with videos like the one going around is of participation in a seamless, infinite, directed loop where the player and computer are constantly updating each other. which is where I think a lot of the satisfaction in systemic video games is. 🧵
this is stupid but at some point i think we have to confront the fact that there appears to be a not insignificant demand for videogames to be the holodeck, an infinite virtual playground you can basically live in. except even holodeck programs were actually written by someone, right?
Oh my god some fucking tech dingdong posted this on Twitter with the caption "AI games are going to be amazing" totally seriously, you have to watch it. You have to. In full screen.

the best thing about SLM honestly is that our queue is so diverse in every way i can imagine, aesthetically and in terms of the experiences the writers bring. that is the legacy of a decade of diversity in our readers and editors, of paying contributors, and of having thoughtful communication.

This hits a lot of the notes I've been shouting from the rooftops: the frictionlessness of both producing and consuming slop, and the value of labor as friction that lets us slow down and think. Rather than "unlocking creativity" it's rendering our collective creativity down into a big vat of slop.
Hi. I wrote an essay about AI slop: How it feels like an invasive species for the internet. How its boosters describe building a future that’s devoid of craft. How frictionlessness can be nihilistic & how this stuff seems to leach part of our shared humanity out of the world. I hope you'll read it.
