I had an hour to kill between parent-teacher conferences at my daughter’s high school so went to a cafe to read. While there I had a pastry so bad it boggled the mind. All I am asking is for that to be my biggest disappointment for a while.

The teenager told officers he was a U.S. citizen, but an officer broke the car’s driver’s side window and detained him. In a video, the boy can be heard telling an officer that he is a citizen, to which the officer replies, “Get out of the car” and “I don’t care.”

DHS/ICE, which just got the largest budget increase in its history, claims it doesn't have enough money for hard drives to preserve video evidence in a detainee abuse case at Broadview. Suggests to a judge that maybe the detainees could provide them

Angelita got more pushback from these activists for introducing administrative roadblocks for ICE than Dan Ryan did for calling colleagues Nazis.

The epitome of performative activism is punishing people trying to do positive things while staying silent about inaction—or overtly negative action.
On weds night, after the crowd spent hours saying Angelita was uniquely pro-ICE (???) clr. Koyama lane highlighted that Mitch (a white guy) co-sponsored the reso. The crowd then began bullying Koyama lane
It’s also not lost on me these same folks are praising my male colleague for clarifying the permit process for the ICE building while they’ve raked me through the coals for explaining it.

Genuinely hilarious.

An Oregon pilot program giving cash to homeless youths sees a staggering reduction in homelessness. The program gave participants $1,000 cash payments each month for two years, and at the end of the project's first phase, 91% of participants reported being in stable housing.

Zohran Mamdani doesn’t make me, an American Jew, feel unsafe.

Having the Coast Guard, which falls under the Department of Homeland Security, decide that a swastika isn’t really a symbol of hate? That makes me, an American Jew, feel pretty damn unsafe.

Mayor Wilson’s unwillingness to listen to experts (both those who have been doing this work for years and those who are or have been unhoused), and instead insisting on charging ahead with more short-term shelters without pathways to permanent housing, is going to have a very real body count.
Portland Housing Director Helmi Hisserich has resigned after being "asked to step down without notice that my work was unsatisfactory.”

Her resignation letter, shared with OPB, points to a divide between how the city addresses its housing and homelessness crises.

I'm doing Summer's essay camp again. It's fun, low-pressure, and helps you create a place to play with ideas you might have otherwise left moldering in your notebook. I always come out the other side having discovered something unexpected on the page.

I try to sound measured about this but I actually want to scream in a lot of people's faces. The mayor is deliberately ignoring so many experts to appeal to the barely concealed libidinal cruelty of business dorks and it's so fucking cowardly and awful and BUMBLINGLY INEFFECTIVE AND SELF-DEFEATING
Sweeps are violence and it really is that simple. If you live in Portland and have a heart in your body please take the time to testify in person/zoom tomorrow or in writing and ask our city council to reroute money away from sweeps, which do not reduce homelessness. www.portland.gov/council-cler...
