the main reason to go after the rich is that if you don’t the entire structure of your society is predicated on the whims of people who are entirely disconnected from ordinary life

billionaires are simply too dangerous to exist, and any budgetary stuff that comes out of it is just a bonus

If you ever find yourself wondering how things like the Epstein story happened, consider the mid-level newspaper editor who admitted in a public judicial inquiry that he destroyed a woman’s life and drove her to suicide to try and impress Piers Morgan.

I sometimes worry I go a bit too hard with my resentment of British newspaper journalists as a class, but then I am reminded of stuff like this and am reaffirmed in my belief that we simply do not loathe them enough.

Sharing from a friend, a passage from the Leveson Inquiry regarding the British actor Denholm Elliott, who died of AIDS in 1992. Three years after her death, the News of the World journalist Paul McMullan did the following to his daughter—neither a celebrity nor even someone of public interest.

This is just really embarrassing for these guys. Your intellectual hero is an amphetamine casualty from the Britpop years. It would be less ridiculous to be queuing up for a lecture by Ginger Spice.

You cannot ethically do this @zohrankmamdani.bsky.social — not even after 7 days, not even with Dept of Homeless Services leading instead of the NYPD. There is no ethical way to harass and steal from people who have been so failed by society. The only ethical thing you can do is to give them a home.
We asked people who lived in homeless encampments that were cleared out in city “sweeps” to write about what object was the hardest for them to lose.

“They took my baby pictures and my moms obituaries,” a man in California wrote.

“I Have Lost Everything”: The Toll of Cities’ Homeless Sweeps
Cities often take belongings — including important documents and irreplaceable mementos — when they conduct sweeps of homeless encampments. ProPublica gave notecards to people across the country so th...

you know what the difference is between a million dollars and a billion dollars?

a billion dollars
I am very annoyed that people think 'rich' means 'that guy has a mercedes and takes a vacation to italy once a year' and not 'that guy has more money than 40% of the world combined and can decide to start or stop wars based on his personal prejudices'

the sums involved are incomprehensible

Trillion would take you 31,709 years, so you may see why I rebuke the idea that the world's richest Nazi pedophile might be "worth" a trillion dollars

If you got one dollar every second from the moment you were born, you would hit one million dollars after 11.5 days.

You would not hit one BILLION dollars until just before your 32nd birthday.
again we do not really do a good job of explaining how wealthy people like Jeff Bezos are

his net worth is $253.2 billion.
so he could take one million dollars, and just light it on fire
and then do it again tomorrow
and again the day after that
and then do it every day for 693 years and 8 months

Just saw one of them vague non-denominational Christian commercials that ended with "Being human shouldn't be this hard. What if Jesus showed us a new way?"

And, dog, it's been 2000 years, I don't think you can call it "new" anymore

This is the only way to be. The only time I care about ratings or things is in my TV shows, if I think they're really good but the ratings are low enough they might get canceled. Then I try to get more people to watch them so they don't get canceled. That's about it.
One of the things I’ve let go of in enjoying entertainment products is caring about box office returns or how many videogames got sold. I don’t own a media company! Not my problem! I’m a customer! If I get chicken nuggets I don’t ask the McDonalds manager how many units they’re moving! I eat them!
