And if you need whistles, stop by the bookstore. We have whistles for you and your friends!
We absolutely need every person possible to be trained up and ready to confront ICE and get them out of our neighborhood and city. Great opportunity for a training here:
Monday night at 6pm on Zoom! Invite your friends and neighbors who want to get more involved in protecting their community to an ICE Watch Welcome and Orientation.

There are already 100 bookstores registered for this year's event after only a few hours. Here, have a map. Show them some love.

speaking of, I’d love to talk to you if you’re a non-fiction literary agent, or knows one who might want to talk to me
just focusing on attempting to sell a book at the moment, which also feels improbable and yet somehow more probable than a lot of formerly more practical career moves that are now looking way less so

This is a long thread full of incredibly good publishing advice.

Listen to Krista. Please.
I want to do a thread on "Small Press Red Flags" brought to you by years in the trenches combined with some issues I’m seeing pop up again in writer circles.

Note: an isolated incident might not be a red flag, but cumulative flags are always worth examination.

First off: Let’s talk about money.

I am being haunted by ghosts of cats past. I keep seeing a cat dash past my bedroom door our of the corner of my eye, but all of my cats are snuggled up & snoring within my sightline.

We live in a really old house, and the plumbing is in a crawlspace. Sometimes the old pipes rupture in the winter and you can tell because there’s like a low rushing sound under your feet. And well… Buy some books?

Rice cooker & large toaster oven with convection.

Honorable mention to the mini ice cream maker.
Everybody has two kitchen appliances that will change their life. The problem is, they're different for everybody.

I'm not a Ring Guy, but if I had the 💲, I would make myself a Ring Guy for this. Maybe one of you can give it a good home?

Hillary makes some of my absolute favorite chandelier-y dangles & these are no exception. Make your ears happy & help Hillary pay down an unexpected vet bill.

I'm currently fascinated by the Sharks vs. Jets shenanigans of the seagulls trying to move in on the local crows.
The birds in your neighborhood - even inner city - are every bit as fascinating as jungle birds.

This is why I’m pushing for a state escrow account that holds federal funds before sending them on to Washington. If Trump wants to steal our tax dollars that were legally appropriated by Congress, then we should just be paying ourselves.
“Minnesota, New York, California, Illinois and Colorado will be cut off from around $7 billion in funding for the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program, which provides cash assistance to households with children, according to two people familiar with the matter.”

Monstrously cruel.

Hey, friends. Hillary's doggo decided (against her will, I'm sure) that it would be groovy to start the new year with a large, unexpected vet bill. If you need a little sparkle to carry you into 2026 on a cloud of happiness, check out the offerings in the thread below.
Tildy got an interdigital cyst between her toes and has gone to the vet three times. We thought it might be a tumor, but the biopsy said no, which is the good news. But I didn't have this in my budget. Sigh.

Yes, you.

If your resolution this year is to support more independent bookstores, hi!👋🏽

We’re Bookshop.org, an ethical alternative to Amazon for buying books online where every purchase supports indie bookstores all over the U.S. 😌📚

Spinach. As a kid, we only had it canned & canned spinach is an abomination. My first exposure to fresh spinach was a revelation.

Non-food: Big band music. It was too associated with long car trips with grandparents.
What's something you hated as a kid but like now? Brussels Sprouts have clearly applied themselves and made great progress. I like 'em!
