A woman was gridlocked in her car at an ICE abduction today so ICE smashed her window & kidnapped her. We contacted her mom after & she kept saying, "she's just an ordinary mom." I kept thinking how yeah, we're all ordinary people standing against fascists—& I believe in the ordinary people, in us.

I never noticed how often I reach for terms that describe someone's intelligence or psychological state - when what I really want to criticize is their moral character - until I started paying attention and trying to stop.

It's a social conditioning we've all received but it's not serving us.
To add on to this, because Erin's getting a lot of "ugh, then what CAN we say?" in the comments: the problem is not a naughty list of banned words to be replaced by approved synonyms. The problem is that general "intelligence" as a concept is largely incoherent and only useful for eugenics.
I’m seeing increased use of this word and I just want to gently suggest that if there’s one word you can manage to remove from your vocabulary it should be this one.

It was coined by a eugenicist who used it as a diagnosis to forcibly institutionalize and sterilize mentally disabled people.

This entire thread is heartening. I mean it literally makes you take heart, to be encouraged (again, literally gaining courage), and it does it without minimizing what's taking place in Minneapolis.

Everybody who cares about democracy and community should read this.
I came to Minneapolis to report on what's going on, and one of the main questions I showed up with is "just what is the scale of the resistance?" After all, we're all used to the news calling Portland a "war zone" or whatever when it's just some protests in one part of town.

There have been big flocks of robins--often more than 50 birds at a time--feasting on berries near Washington Square Park and the Newberry Library recently. I'm not sure I've seen so many in a very urban area of Chicago in winter. 🪶

Occasionally we get tiny Goldcrests in the garden, hunting for insects amongst the evergreens. They’re resident in Britain, but some Goldcrests cross the North Sea to escape the harsher continental winters; people used to believe they rode on the backs of migrating Woodcocks. (watercolour)

MLK was only 39 when he was killed. Growing up, I thought that was old. But I’m 43 now and I’m stunned by the burden he shouldered at such a young age. I’m also a lot more aware of how hard it is, at any age, to carry the hopes and dreams of an oppressed people on your shoulders, as so many do.

OH MY GOD THIS.

Greenland is a PLACE full of PEOPLE most of whom are INUIT and THEIR LIVES AND SOVEREIGNTY MATTER and every commentator turning this into a US/Denmark thing while ignoring the whole history of land grabs in the Americas by white people is

I mean

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
I am begging people to just imagine for a second talking as if the lives of the people in Greenland are an important part of what is happening in Greenland.
We are watching one of the wildest things a nation-state has ever done: A superpower is committing suicide because the GOP Congress is too cowardly to stand up to the Mad King.

This is one of the wildest moments in all of geopolitics ever.

we live in a sick society that thinks preventing problems is a waste of time and effort and hey, guess why everything sucks now
