To be sure, a faux earthworm among owl chicks is never safe, but the blindsnake likely burrows under the surface for safety.
Studies show that nests where blindsnakes are found produce chicks that grow faster & remain healthier.

Although these look like earthworms, they're actually Rena dulcis, the Texas blindsnake (or threadsnake).
They form one of the most unusual mutually beneficial relationships with the tiny screech owl: they play nanny & housekeeper in screech owl nests.

Catsuka includes an art book scan indicating that the significantly brighter palette of the 4K restoration is closer to the film's originally intended colors, but if there's ever been an anime movie where the oppressively heavy gloom of older formats felt justified it is Jin-Roh.
"Jin-Roh" 4K remaster looks magnificent. The Japanese UHD is coming next month (with english dub+subs).
