The thing about Casablanca being the greatest film of all time is people don't believe you and then they watch it
You ever stop and think about CASABLANCA? You ever stop and think about "Welcome back to the fight, this time, I know our side will win?" You ever think about a bar full of people defiantly singing La Marseillaise, played by a soundstage full of Jewish refugees? You ever think about CASABLANCA??????

Franzi Schimmer captured this Grizzly bear in Brooks Falls, Alaska just floating along, tippy-tapping down the river, browsing the salmon.

Prior to hibernation, up to 40% of a bear's body mass is fat, which is less dense than water (~0.9 g/cm^2), so the murder-monster is also a floaty-boaty.

A theology prof had a small cabin built by a lake in Maine, a place he could go to fish & study & write. Outhouse, no electricity, but still a nice little cabin that involved putting a bit of work and money into a structure on land he did not own. …

If only there was an intellectual discipline that could explain why the white men who run universities are so eager to shut down gender studies.
Eliminating gender studies courses helps to ensure that universities and other institutions will continue to protect men who benefit from the abuse of women and girls, either directly or through their connections to those who exploit girls and women for profit.

Have asked this before and always like the responses. What are your biggest “I saw that in the first run cinema” flexes? Couple of mine:

Transformers: The Movie (1986)
Batman: Mask of the Phantasm (1993)
Office Space (1999)

The self-appointed defender of white cultural traditions is wearing a buttondown with a suit
Trump nominated a legit white nationalist to a top post at the State Department. I asked him some basic questions about his belief in the “erasure of white culture”. Watch this embarrassing, fumbling answer. Like he has never before been asked to explain his views.

One of my guiding principles in life is:

Anyone advocating for an open, rational debate about a subject is doing so instead of saying what their position in that debate would be, because if they did they would be correctly tarred and feathered and have an L-plate stapled to their forehead.
"Why can't we have a calm discussion about AI?"

Cuz the data centers are being built carelessly and at speed, polluting poor neighborhoods, cuz it's drinking my fucking aquifer, and cuz all my art and writing have been plagisrized while the worst assholes crow about my impending obsolescense...

Yes — Mark Hamill getting cast as The Joker because he was begging to be on the show RIGHT when Tim Curry got fired is a classic example, as documented in my 2017 oral history of Batman: The Animated Series:

why would anyone think scavenging for the sun's energy in ancient rot is more manly & correct than snatching it straight from the sky
"We will harness the sun and capture its rays, my liege! Power beyond measure, even in dark of night! Power across the whole realm!"
Why not go full demagogue and say "we're gonna go nuts with solar, wind and batteries until electricity's too cheap to meter"?

And then aggressively blame Republicans for delays (including ones that are just logistical)

i have a crank theory that *part* of the reason a certain kind of user is enthusiastic about AI products is downstream from user interface design having been on a steady downward slide for years, and AI products *seem* to make interfacing easier on the surface
I work at one of the biggest media companies in the world and there's about a 30% hit rate on execs knowing how to open email attachments. I think, much like politics, we enthusiastic dorks don't realize how many people treat the entire concept of tech as radioactive

1) Good. Burn it and salt the earth.

But also,

2) I think someone making this argument would be vastly overestimating the importance of individual rich assholes to the continued functioning of the entire system.
“If all the names in the Epstein files are released then our entire system will collapse.”

Works for me.

The choice to frame this rhetorically as a negotiation *with ICE and DHS* rather than, you know, a decision about their future made by their rightful superiors in the popularly elected legislature is, to me, incredibly grating.
Our DHS reform demands are exceedingly reasonable.

We're asking ICE to do nothing more than follow the standards that the vast majority of law enforcement agencies already follow.

Republicans, the ball is in your court. The clock is ticking.
