One of the ways I enjoy period English dramas is working out how much things would cost in today’s dollars. It blows my mind how lavishly the aristocrats lived, with their absurd rules and rituals. Like Downton Abbey, it would cost MILLIONS per year to live like that. Of course it finally collapsed.

Facebook showed me this little mosaic of @juanferreyra.bsky.social's GREEN ARROW REBIRTH I made nine years ago (!). I used to put these together to promote every new issue on Twitter (RIP). Working on this book with Juan and @benjaminpercy.bsky.social remains one of my favorite jobs. It was so fun.

Ignores the problem of performative non-reading. In college I had a roommate who left an unread copy of the Communist Manifesto on his table so visitors would think he was interesting.
Oh fuck off

Gonna feel this in the midterms.
MSNBC reported Schumer's office felt that the longer that shutdown went on, the more likely it was that people would start to blame the Dems.

My kingdom for Democrats that don't govern out of fear. I've said it before and I'll say it again: The American people are far braver than their reps.

This is genuinely top 5 dumbest thing any American politician has ever said. These fucking people.
Hassan: With the government reopening shortly, Republicans now finally have to come to the table. Or make no mistake, Americans will remember who stood in the way.

It really does seem like there's a decent chance that these senators screwed us because they don't want their personal Thanksgiving plans to be disrupted.
Anyway a great way to radicalize people is for them to realize that you just abandoned their chance at being able to access and afford health care because you didn’t like waiting in line at the airport.

ICE has conducted raids a few blocks from my house in Berwyn twice in the last week, kidnapping people each time. I am furious by day, and mourning for my neighbors and nation each night.

It’s funny but also sad to watch the latest and final Downton Abbey movie, which is almost nauseatingly saccharine, and then watch the first season, in which Lady Mary, her mother and Anna carry the corpse of a Turkish diplomat through the house in the dead of night. Another show that lost its edge.

When you read about the Nazis it's shocking how much of what they did was just rank gangsterism in terms of both motive and method. As a practical matter the Night of the Long Knives is indistinguishable from the baptism/massacre montage in The Godfather. "Today I settled all Party business."
Went back to the history of the Sicilian Mafia to illustrate something obvious but worth stating explicitly: The Trump administration behaves like an organized crime syndicate running a protection racket, not a representative government www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2025/1...

I’ve only been watching period costume dramas, to the point that someone approached me at a party to express concern.

Dems already tired of winning.
SCHUMER is on the floor now making this offer to end the shutdown:

Clean CR
Bipartisan "minibus" of approps bills
1-year ACA funding extension
Bipartisan cmte to negotiate on health care

"This is a reasonable offer that reopens the government, deals with health care affordability."

What he means is that without the filibuster, they could theoretically pass voting legislation that would guarantee Republican “victories.” This connects to what Bannon said earlier; they are fearful of what may happen if they don’t coup d'état ASAP. No constitution, no SCOTUS to check them either.
Trump on ending the filibuster: "If we do it, we will never lose the midterms and we will never lose a general election ... it would be impossible to lose an election."
