Free Speech and Anti-Democratic Violence
The resurgence of far-right extremist groups—like “sovereign” militias, white supremacists, and avowedly fascist gangs—has exposed the First Amendment’s vulnerabilities to the “leaderless resistance” ...

given how infrequently I’ve published in recent years, let me be a bit selfish and indulgent as I share “Free Speech and Anti-Democratic Violence” – plus a thread elaborating its arc and aims.

when even the Indivisible people are calling for the minority leader's head on a proverbial pike, I think you might be underestimating just how motivating and mobilizing widespread, righteous fury can be – particularly when it's inseparable from "that bigger fight" we're being told to focus on.
But there are real dangers out there that must be fought; and energy spent fighting each other is energy lost to that bigger fight.

you can pick up two front-row seats to see Jane Krakowski in "Oh, Mary!" later this month for roughly the same price. and you'd probably leave with a better understanding of US politics and political history, tbqf.

today is a great day to tell your senators to fuck all the way off forever if they can’t call for schumer to step down right now
and then said i expect my representatives to support literally anybody else for leadership and that schumer shouldn’t wait till the next election to resign

if a Senator cannot compellingly and aggressively call for these bare minimum changes to party leadership—*any* Senator, no matter their name, policies, past accomplishments—then they cannot remain in office. and they should not know a single fucking moment of peace until they’re cast out for good.
The coordinated nature of this—none are facing voters in 2026—means that either Schumer approved it or failed in his job as Senate Majority Leader to stop it.
Dems voting "no" get zero credit until they demand a change in leadership. Schumer out as Leader, Durbin out as Whip.

They are the worst at this on the merits and the politics.
They are the worst at this on the merits and the politics.
Bridging my current life in Chicago and my past life in D.C., I argue today at @newrepublic.com that Democrats should ~never~ vote to fund this government. Make John Thune blow up Senate rules and Republicans wholly own the U.S. extra-military military doing war crimes against us, funded by us.
The Case for the Forever Shutdown
Senate Democrats actually allowing the GOP to stop funding the government is only the first step. Now they have to make the case that Trump’s government is illegitimate.
