#libre-office
And now I type that, maybe I'll check if it still works - found a number of downloads for it, and I ditched 365 this year becuase of AI bs - currently using libre office.

Love libre office.

libre office is great though, google docs also pretty useful if you like programming spreadsheets.
I had my first remote job running linux back in 2000

Just install Libre Office and get rid of Micro$oft Office.
WinAero Tweaker (freeware) will help you kill off CoPilot.

I've been using free, open source Libre Office (and Linux-based PC) for more than a decade and it's easy to use, compatible with Office and I have zero regrets.
I'm gonna get yelled at for this, but you can download LibreOffice for free. You do have to learn a slightly different interface, but you never have to worry about this AI enshittification drive MS is on. The time has never been better to switch.

I moved to Libre Office and the peace is exquisite.

If you have some control over what software to use, then I highly recommend Libre Office. It’s works better than Office (more intuitive, less clutter), saves files to Word, Excel, etc. and is free.

If only. My university requires project budgets in excel with custom macros not ported to libre office. Otherwise I’m microsoft-free, but it’s hard to escape MS entirely.

I know I'm a bit late to the punch, but I would like to point out that with all the hullabaloo about #timesnewroman the default font for #libreoffice is LiberationSerif. #FreeSoftware #freeyourself

Libre office is a genuinely good alt to ms office. The only thing it lacks is VBA, which some organisations might rely on.

But not most people even know VBA is a thing. When they realise there's good free alts. Well they won't be paying for 365 any more

I can't stand to use Microsoft office anymore because of copilot. I'm so glad I switched to libre office a long time ago
December 15, 2025 at 6:34 AM
Okay. Found the Libre Office Presentation app.

This is kinda fun.

Just pics not words because, if someone is talking and I can hear them, I hate having words in front of me.

I'm not sure about Libre, but Open Office and Word both have little tantrums when importing from other programs and need to be partially reformatted. Since I've done it with 31 books at this point, I barely even notice anymore, lol (that's not true--it annoys me each time, but I'm USED to it 😅)

Thanks, David! I'm a Windows user, so no Mac stuff, but I can definitely look into Libre office. I appreciate your help.

P.S. Astrid says hi.

(Also please don't "helpfully" pitch Open Office, Libre Office, etc to me and tell me I should not be using Microsoft. I'm a fucking professional writer and I am well aware these things exist. Have the basic respect and courtesy to understand that I have a reason for using MS Office.)
December 14, 2025 at 6:07 PM
Pretty much. I am entertained at myself because I hated the ribbon menus in Office when they came in, but I do miss them working in Libre Office.

Though I am only using Writer. Something I did successfully took copilot out of Excel.

How are you finding libre office?
December 14, 2025 at 4:15 PM

Also:
- I'm against gen-AI
- hiding on your PC won't prevent others using it
- cancelling office 360 payment and switching to Libre Office is more useful
- asking Mozilla to add a "Disable AI features" button would be more useful
- I switched my parents to Linux (with a green hill background :D)
