@candacerobbauthor.bsky.social, just finished rereading A Vigil of Spies, and Thoresby's death just wipes me out every time--sobbing my eyes out on the first day of the new year. Revisiting the changes with a new Archbishop of York makes me even more excited for the new book, when we get a NEW KING!

A beautiful tribute to the art of letter writing--quickly becoming a thing of the past, certainly in Denmark, but, honestly, it's been a while since I sent a letter in the post.
Maybe in the new year...

I couldn't say it better: "Wishing you kindness, courage, enchanting stories, and abundant creativity as new year unfolds."

Love this thread.
Writers write.
We try this, we try that, & we chortle when it comes alive.
And read read read.
That's it! That's the secret!
This set of observations is produced by my scrolling Reddit and otherwise listening to people talk about "how to write."

A) there is no requirement that any of your characters has any sort of "arc" let alone a redemption.

B) there is also no requirement that your fiction has a plot.

Unsolicited writing advice, no. 187:
Small details often speak loudest. Don't focus on the car crash: look for the child's shoe in the road.

A conversation with a friend about art yesterday inspired me to look at the structure of my wip. At last I see what's been nagging at me, I see how to fix it, & I'm excited to pull it apart and redo it!
The writing life: utter madness, & I love it.

Every Christmas since maybe 2005 we've watched TLOTR, & every year I've said I won't get into it this time, & every year I get hooked. This year it feels so sad. I teared up at Treebeard's poetry. Fave moment so far this year, Eowyn's chant at the burial. I annoyed my husband by replaying it.

Need a wonderful Christmas story? Here's one, Rick Steves has made sure the homeless in his area have a refuge. ❤️
It’s the “season of love and giving”…but this year, doesn’t it seem more like a “season of fear and taking”? Like many of you, I’ve been saddened by the human impact of draconian government budget cuts and how angry many housed Americans are at unhoused Americans.
