"How is one to live a moral and compassionate existence when one finds darkness not only in one's culture but in oneself? There are simply no answers to some of the great pressing questions. You continue to live them out, making your life a worthy expression of leaning into the light." - Barry Lopez

Dartmoor, Devon, West Country friends: The Chagford Mummers will be performing all day on Sunday, 4 January, traveling from pub to pub in Drewsteignton and Chagford. It's traditional, folkloric, silly, and free...but the players won't say no to a pint of beer. #Mumming #Folklore #FolkDrama

It's the national year of reading in the uk in 2026. Instead of asking "why don't kids read any more", ask "how can I help them find the stories (and non fic) they will fall in love with". Less "get off my lawn whippersnappers" and more "come, sit on the lawn, here's a comic".

Wishing you kindness, courage, enchanting stories, and abundant creativity as new year unfolds.

Our Lottie turned three years old this week. She tumbled into our family at an inopportune time and caused absolute havoc, but stole our hearts. Now I can't imagine life without this bright-eyed, funny, loving, and irrepressibly joyful little soul.

Happy winter holidays from me and the little reindeer, whatever you may be celebrating this season. And for those who find the holidays hard, for all kinds of reasons, I'm thinking of you especially today. May the days pass gently.

If you're looking for a last-minute holiday present for someone who loves art and biographies, 'Artists, Siblings, Visionaries' is terrific. Our spaniel, Lottie, does't look terribly impressed in this picture, but I was.
Having read all the previous biographies of Gwen & Augustus John, I was intrigued by @judithmackrell.bsky.social's new joint biography, wondering what more could be written about these two artists. Quite a lot, as it turns out. It is a magnificent and insightful book, and I didn't want it to end.

I had this poster tacked up in my art studio (on Endicott Street in the North End of Boston) in the late '80s. Too many items on this list are still the same all these years later. <sigh>

Another book for my Reading List. I'm happy to see some fine women artists in this collection of 20th century art conversations.
Presuming to plug this book which was a labour of love & about which I never even had a chat with a publicist. It contains 20 verbatim 1965/6 conversations with huge names of American art (see back of jacket) & is beautifully designed. The conversations were among 100 recorded in one year by my dad.

A beautiful piece on landscape, loss, and transformation by one of my favourite writers: Terry Tempest Williams, based in Utah.

A Hollow Bone – Terry Tempest Williams
Bringing us into her love affair with the receding Great Salt Lake, Terry Tempest Williams embraces a fearless interspecies intimacy and summons us to be present with the losses in this landscape.

This week I was invited onto performance artist Jolie Rose's 'Nonsense in the Chaos' podcast. It's different than the books-and-publishing talks I usually do, being a conversation about myth, ritual, nature, Spirit, & kairos time. If that appeals, have a listen. It's on Apple podcasts, Spotify, etc.
