Friends and work colleagues: I'm still out of the office (due to a health issue), though working as much as I can from home. I'm doing my best to answer urgent work emails, but moving very slowly through the rest. Thank you for your patience while I get back on my feet.

Thank you to everyone who sent kind words and encouragement. I won't be on social media much while I'm dealing with this, but hope to be back soon. To those of you at the WFC, have a fabulous time. There are so many friends there I am deeply sorry to miss, and I hope we can reconnect in the future.

To colleagues in the fantasy field: I'm afraid I'm not going to the World Fantasy Convention after all. I'm dealing with a sudden health issue (not dangerous, don't worry, but urgent) and therefore cannot travel right now. I'm so sorry I won't be with you in Brighton, and hope you have a good time.

Goodmorning from me and Lottie.

The pagan-friendly Anglican church in my small, rural English village would have no problems with Episcopalians! Here, for example, is our vicar blessing a pagan Obby Oss (performed by my husband) before a Beltane procession: our annual pagan/Christian/all-faiths-and-no-faith May Day celebration.

Good morning from Dartmoor, Charles. I hope all is well on your side of the world.

Lottie sleeps on the studio sofa, snoring softly as I work. I can't rest today (deadlines, deadlines), so I've outsourced this job to her.

Good morning from me and Lottie, Charles. We hope you have a good weekend.

"It's all a matter of paying attention, being awake in the present moment, and not expecting a huge payoff. The magic in this world seems to work in whispers and small kindnesses." - Charles de Lint

... And here's another fine novel retelling another classic fairy ballad from the Scottish border country:

"How is one to live a moral and compassionate existence when one finds darkness not only in one's culture but in oneself? There are simply no answers to some of the great pressing questions. You continue to live them out, making your life a worthy expression of leaning into the light." - Barry Lopez

Due to the breadth and depth of this reading list, I've now discovered Marina Benjamin's extraordinary work. Thank you, thank you, thank you to Lily Dunn and Manchester U Press.

In the aftermath of the weekend's storms, it's a bright and beautiful day here on Dartmoor. Following my dog through the autumn hills, I am reminded of all that is good in the world; and all that is worth the long work of preserving.

Good morning from Dartmoor, Charles, where the intensely stormly weather of the weekend has passed and all is calm again.
October 6, 2025 at 7:12 AM
Storm Amy has landed here in Devon, with a bit of rain and a whole lot of wind. We've been warned of power cuts, so if I disappear from the Internet that will be why. (I don't use a mobile phone, so depend on computer access.) Good luck to friends in areas where the storm is worse than this.

May your weekend also be a good one, Charles.

It's the first of the month. Rabbit, rabbit, rabbit. (But what the heck happened to September? I could swear it had only just started....)

Lottie dozing on the studio sofa while I work at my desk nearby. She's growing up to be such a good studio dog.
