If you’re a PhD student, don’t fall into the trap of only caring about your research and nothing else. I love what I do for a living, but it’s not all that I am. There’s so much more waiting for you out there.

This is what I meant when I spoke of review overload. I only have a small amount of time each day to devote to research activities. It's not part of my main job. But I have an article review request, an edited book review request, and a PhD thesis for examination to read right now.

Today, I got news an ambitious multi-year, multi-university center I am (a small) part of had been funded; I went for a swim and saw seven rays and a groper fish; I hung out with my PhD advisor over flat whites and discussed research with an by my own student.

Life is good, 10/10, would recommend.

Sound familiar? Our public research system exploits highly skilled workers every single day. One way it does this is by paying those conducting research while doing MSc and PhD programmes less than minimum wage. Often less than training wage. Sometimes nothing at all. With 0 jobs in sight..

Here’s the thing, emerging scientists aren’t going to flee to do science elsewhere…they just won’t do the science.

We will lose at least one, if not two generations of knowledge if we don’t get this shit sorted out immediately.
My teen, who had dreamt of being an astrophysicist, just told me he wants to go to law school because, “Science isn’t going to be a priority in the US in the future…I don’t want a job where I’ll be constantly worried my funding will be taken away.”

Gutting. How many future scientists have we lost?
