Are you (or do you know of) an undergrad with an interest in solar physics? Check out the Leiden/ESA Astrophysics Program for Summer Students (LEAPS 2026). Myself, Andy To and Henrik Eklund invite you to come work with us at ESTEC on "Catching the Solar Wind in Action". leaps.strw.leidenuniv.nl#none
LEAPS
LEAPS is an opportunity for students with an interest in astronomy and astrophysics to perform a 10 week summer research project in collaboration with a research scientist from Leiden Observatory or ESA/ESTEC. The program is open to all students not currently engaged in a Ph.D. program (please see the full eligibility criteria) We would like to use LEAPS as an opportunity to increase the diversity of researchers in Astronomy as we understand that successful science is supported by this. Students are selected for the program based on their academic achievements and research potential. Each applicant has the opportunity to choose up to two projects of interest, and they are selected by project advisors based on what they indicate their scientific interests and experience to be. Research at Leiden Observatory and ESA/ESTEC takes place on a diverse array of topics (see below for LEAPS 2026 projects), and student projects will likely consist of anything from the analysis of data from world-class telescopes, to large computer simulations, to hands-on work in the astrochemistry laboratories.

The sunspot group has remained quiet since the X class flare, aurora last night was mainly due to the high speed stream from the coronal hole. These conditions will continue until for a time until the coronal hole disappears from view…#SpaceWeather

AR 4274 is rotating back into Earth's firing line for the 3rd time! 🌍☀️ It's been busy throwing out eruptions while on the farside, along with other ARs keeping things lively. The recent M-class flare and latest data suggests it may still be quite complex 👀

🚨 Here we go again! X4.05 flare detected from AR4274! 🚨 Although the active region is rotating towards the limb it continues to produce major flares. Proton flux measurements are also showing an increase. AR4274 keeps delivering!☀️

Looks like Bz is northwards (although decreasing) so we may be in for disappointment tonight unless the situation changes. The weather is awful here and I have a 6am flight so I am signing off for tonight 🌧️👋

🚨Here we go‼️🚨 Looks like the third eruption could be just arriving at L1 🌞💨🛰️🌍 #SpaceWeather #Aurora #NorthernLights

There is now a G5 (extreme) geomagnetic storm watch in place (Met Office), we are waiting for the third eruption to arrive although, due to uncertainty in the propagation models it is unclear whether it will arrive today or tomorrow 🌞💨🌎👀 #SpaceWeather #Aurora #StephsStormWatch

Improved dramatically for a brief time, maybe better luck tomorrow 😊 #SpaceWeather #Aurora #NorthernLights

CME arrival!🎯 Real-time solar wind data from ACE at L1 showing the first CME from AR4274 is arriving.⚡
This is the start of a long geomagnetic storming period - aurora chasers, get ready! 👀🌌

Here’s our one-two-three punch! 🥊 🥊🥊 According to the latest run of the HUXt model the third CME is expected to impact on 13th November at around 13 UT. This is going to be a tiring couple of days 😅 #SpaceWeather #StephsStormWatch

🚨Storm Watch Upgraded! 🚨 G4 (severe) geomagnetic storm watch now in place for 12th November. This is due to the predicted arrival of the third CME. Aurora likely visible further south across the UK (weather permitting)! 🌞💨🌍 #SpaceWeather #StephsStormWatch

🚨 X5.1 FLARE from AR4274! 🚨
Active Region 4274 just unleashed an X5.1 solar flare - one of the strongest of the current solar cycle! ⚡The flare was associated with another full halo earth-directed CME ☀️ This AR keeps on giving!

🚨 G3 (strong) geomagnetic storm watch in effect from 18:00 UT tonight! 🚨 Two Earth-directed CMEs from AR4274 arriving late Tues/Wed⚡Aurora visible across north UK with clear skies, potentially extending further south 🌌 #SpaceWeather #StephsStormWatch #Aurora weather.metoffice.gov.uk/specialist-f...

📊 Latest HUXt forecast shows 2 CMEs from AR4274 arriving on 12 Nov at ~4 & 15UT respectively. AR4274 is delivering a one-two punch!⚡️🥊 G2+ storm conditions increasingly likely. Aurora prospects strong for northern UK despite poor weather forecast.

Now that we have the coronagraph data from GOES/CCOR I can now confirm that the CME is a full halo, which means it is Earth-directed. This increases the chances of a stronger geomagnetic storm and impressive aurora displays. Stay tuned! 🌞💥💨🌎 #SpaceWeather #StephsStormWatch

🚨 AR4274 just fired off another X-class flare! ⚡
CME confirmed, main bulk doesn't appear Earth-directed, though it's difficult to determine atm. If AR4274 keeps this up... are we heading for a situation similar to May 2024? Keep watching 👀

The HUXt model forecasts a direct hit but at a slightly later time of 12th Nov ~3:30 UT. Weather forecast still looks bad... 🫣
November 10, 2025 at 9:19 AM
Arrival expected on Tuesday night, fingers crossed the weather improves as it’s been awful recently 🤞🌧️
A #solarstorm with an initial speed of ~730 km/s is on its way toward Earth! It’s associated with an X1.7-class flare that peaked today around 07:35 UTC.
The CME is expected to arrive Tuesday, 11 November, around 20:00 UTC (21:00 CET).
Let’s hope for a better aurora show than on Friday🤞🌌
November 9, 2025 at 5:25 PM
The X1.8 flare from AR4274 did produce a CME! While the bulk of the eruption appears to be propagating northwest, there is likely an Earth-directed component 🌍 Waiting for the models to understand propagation & arrival ⚡
