This is it, and not just for higher Ed . Zero long-term planning, a society full of institutions run on a toxic combination of individual self-interest and pursuit of instant gratification. “This will be gone soon, how much of the copper wire can I get my hands on as it’s stripped from the walls.”
I don't think they do expect to sustain their institutions. Every decision is about right now. And everyone in charge cares about themselves, right now. 'Tomorrow never comes and even if it does, it isn't my problem.'

Shit, Biden himself did it. Path of least resistance.
I don't know how university leaders expect to sustain their institutions *even as class-reproduction machines* if they sell out to a dictator and crush their own core workers. Like, you have to put oil in the engine. You have to put gasoline in the car.

every republican president of my lifetime has completely destroyed the economy
More from ADP: The number of jobs created in August 2025 was revised downward from 54,000 to a loss of -3,000.
What's more, employment fell for the third time in four months, ADP said

ADP Nonfarm Payrolls for September: -32,000. A big miss -- the forecast was for a gain of 50.5k -- and it is the largest decline since March 2023
ADP numbers are leading non-farm payrolls lower.

It’d be great if a billionaire were ever arrested for breaking the law like one of the little people would be.

Come on. Just once? As a treat.
He’s already broken the law by offering the bribes. Arrest him.

I love to call my Senators' offices three times per week and try to cajole them into doing the most elementary political messaging and strategy. This is what it means to be an engaged citizen: leaving a strenuously polite voicemail for a 74yo on a more regular cadence than I talk to my parents.

Don't take this as gospel. It's not official. It's a very knowledgable source's best understanding of the situation. This persons likely Yeses on cloture are. Schumer, Hassan, Peters, Durbin, Schatz, King, Shaheen, Fetterman, Cortez Masto and Gillibrand.

Protest at the SOTU. Don't protest at the SOTU. Whatever. But the path Dems inevitably take -- half protesting, half scolding one another for protesting, endlessly leaking to the press about how the other Dems are doing it wrong -- is the worst of all possible worlds. The party just looks pathetic.

Schumer needs to go. It's as urgent as when Biden needed to go after the first debate.
Some intel: I've talked to journalists and folks on the Hill about this. Last night after OMB's action, some Senate Dems tried to unify the caucus to vote against Duffy. Schumer, among others, opposed it, and it flopped.

The current Dem leadership strategy is to use strong language but not do shit.
Yesterday, every Democrat voted to advance Sean Duffy (DOT)'s nomination.

In protest against Trump's unconstitutional freezing of federal funds, 22 Democrats voted NO on confirmation today.

Glad to see more demonstrated urgency. But that 22 should be 47.

This blatantly illegal move by the Trump Administration should have severe consequences. None of his remaining cabinet picks should receive a single Democratic vote until all is remedied and we can ensure this won’t happen again.

Congress holds the power of spending, not him.
