Every now & again, it's useful to say why I do all these eel history tweets.

Mostly, it's because eels need our help. They're critically endangered, seeing a c.90% drop in population in the last decades.

But it's hard to get people to care! 'Cause...eels are gross & slimy. 1/2

Okay right I am in a cafe feeding both of us so let’s talk about this. It’s one of those things where it almost seems reasonable, at first: why *shouldn’t* breastfeeding be discreet? Let’s unpack that because it’s not actually reasonable.
I am going to wake up and drink my coffee and run my errands and then I am going to give you all a talk about this specific strain of misogyny because wow it is pervasive

“Statutory maternity leave allows most new mums and birthing parents to take up to 52 weeks off work.
Statutory maternity pay is paid for up to 39 weeks” right yes I wonder if anyone in government can see the GLARING PROBLEM with this
Review of parental leave and pay is great, but the framing is all wrong: it is not about being "generous and supportive," it is (or should be) about basic equality, and addressing what is currently flagrantly sexist government policy.

I have also gotten this, and it’s surprisingly horrible!! I had such a difficult time breastfeeding chomp, with his tongue tie, that going to exclusive pumping was honestly a relief. and I know how lucky I am that I pump well! because it’s not common! so I roll out the FULL fed is best lecture
Connected to a lot of complicated feelings about breastfeeding, but my experience was that when I was breastfeeding in public people would stop to tell me how much better I was than Those Formula Feeding Mothers, and it was bottle feeding in public that drew hostility.
I have actually never been confronted while breastfeeding in public! I suspect I give off ~vibes~

but in case you need this info, it is illegal under the EA2010 to harass or bother a woman breastfeeding in a public space in England. devolved nations have their own laws but same gist applies

I have an out there name and hoped to give my daughter a more ‘usual’ name without it being Jane etc apparently it’s reallllly difficult for people.
As a person with a difficult name myself, I beg all parents not to impose “unique” spellings and/or pronunciations on their kids. Life is hard enough without constantly having to explain yourself straight out of the gate. Your child will be unique even if you call them something extremely boring
Xachary I am afraid that everyone spells it wrong because your parents burdened you with an illogical name that defies the conventions of the English language.

I have emailed my MP and asked them to support this amendment. The link below makes it incredibly easy to do the same, and if you are a UK resident I very strongly encourage you to do so. Abortion is critical healthcare and we must decriminalise it NOW.
Farage and the US Religious Right are celebrating policy wins here - and there's been a huge rise in prosecutions for abortion.

Please email your MP and ask them to support Stella Creasy's amendment to decriminalise abortion; we've made it so easy for you. action.goodlawproject.org/decriminalis...

Sometimes the food goes bad before you use it. Then what?

Just don't be like Salamon Salamon! In 1390, the London fishmonger was charged w/ hiding his bad eels in someone else's cellar. This was his second offense: earlier he was caught slipping rotting eels into a local well!
