Note to those fleeing MuskWorld: my view - Bluesky is the best platform for discussion. Threads is fine if you just want to broadcast into the algorithmic void but it’s awful if you want to talk about a subject.

"Trump isn't finished." nytimes.com/2024/08/21/o...

This is a breakout column by Tom Edsall. His expert sources — political scientists — are united in their call of alarm. There is no phony "both sides do it." And the political press is not spared. Sean Wilentz calls theirs "a staggering failure."

In The Guardian today, an excerpt from the plankton chapter of my book, featuring the exquisite forms, formidable power, and fundamental indispensability of the ocean’s tiniest and most abundant creatures www.theguardian.com/news/article...
Strange and wondrous creatures: plankton and the origins of life on Earth
The long read: Without plankton, the modern ocean ecosystem – the very idea of the ocean as we understand it – would collapse. Earth would have no complex life of any kind

There are some great clickable graphics in this summary of California's progress towards a 100% renewable energy power grid by Alejandro Lazo for Cal Matters.

Yes, there is a long way to go, but with the growth of battery storage deployment I suspect the state will get there ahead of schedule.
California hits milestones toward 100% clean energy — but has a long way to go
Fossil fuels are still the largest source of electricity, but California has made progress with renewables while keeping the lights on.

This is extra infuriating because the opponents to safe streets here ran a single-issue candidate for state assembly against the incumbent **and lost handily**. Their ideas were rejected by democratic process!
On one side you have a project that was initiated after the death of a beloved teacher and supported by the local elected officials and thousands and thousands of residents. On the other side you have some rich people who have a direct line to Eric Adams. Guess which one won out?
