An easy way to explain luddites:

Textile manufacturers brought in machines that could do in an hour what would have taken 12 hours by hand.

And then, tried to keep paying the now 12x more productive workers the same wages as before.

That's it, that was the problem luddites had. Not complex.

In 'Fossil Capital: The Rise of Steam Power and the Roots of Global Warming,' Malm makes a compelling argument that capitalists didn't switch from water power to steam because it was more productive or cost effective, but because it disciplined labor.

AI is the self-acting mule, but even dumber
The markets are staying afloat right now on the hope that AI will destroy American workers. What a bleak thing.

They are also intentionally conflating machine-learning and generative AI slop to confuse and try to make GenAI seem necessary. Google Maps traffic stuff is machine learning, not GenAI, for example. Auto-correct is too. Don't let them make you lose the thread. GenAI slop is slop.
the nyt posts this stuff like avoiding AI for 48 hours is hard and meanwhile i have literally never once intentionally used an AI program for anything ever

Machine learning is a neat tool, but clearly companies are desperate to give “AI” credit for what human scholars accomplish in part because companies have bet the farm on the idea that human ingenuity is expendable. This historian is extraordinary and deserves the real credit.
Oh, man. After reading the article, what it actually says is that an historian did a lot of archival work and spatial research to determine the site of a killing and then the family of the likely perpetrator stepped forward with photographs to confirm identity.

i would like to add one more thing: making *fiction* collaboratively with your friends is a much more raw and vulnerable thing to do than, like, almost any other kind of fucking around.

and most people are also (as a starting point) quite bad at it.
The reason TRPGs are not more broadly popular compared to other hobbies is that they possess more friction points than any of those hobbies, that's the long and the short of it, it's the holy grail people keep trying to figure out a way to fix, and you simply cannot fix it without fixing society

it’s absurd that NYT forced him to delete these skeets, which … convey the factual information that Zohran Mamdani is, in fact, a man of South Asian descent who was born and raised in Africa, and that the pseudonymous source of the hacked material is a white supremacist eugenicist.
