Not a scientific study, but I have observed that a lot of people just want something to stave off boredom, it's not just kids.
For better or worse, live service games keep them busy. And a lot of them are free!
I hate to say it, but these folks may not feel the absence of these historied series.

honestly also a lot of kids just aren't playing games the way older generations did, they're inundated in mobile games and roblox
Young gamers in Japan may not be forming the same attachment to Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest because modern dev cycles are as long as their childhood, users theorize
