Great thread
A friend who teaches theology shared with me a post about CS Lewis's Mere Christianity, which discusses foundational Christian logic across denominations. It reminded me of Dale's tweet below, and I wanted to share some thoughts here regarding modesty and respectability, which are often hot topics.

Perfect example of political media operating under the post-truth standard that (1) distorts the facts until the parties look approximately equal, and (2) holds “do MAGA voters care?” as a higher standard than “is it true?” or “is it important for the public to know about this?”

Our leading news organizations turned a cache of ultimately-innocuous emails into a scandal-coded weeklong series of front page stories leading into the 2016 election. If they do not cover the "emails from notorious pedophile implication the President" emails with the same fervor, it's curious!

“The President sent his lawyer to negotiate a settlement with a convicted sex trafficker to provide cushy accommodation in exchange for her silence on his participation in said sex trafficking” is a cold description of the facts of an insane story that the media doesn’t find worthy of scrutiny

This is going to get spun as a "thermostatic shift" chart, but it should be properly interpreted as a "information environment is broken" chart.

In 2024, voters didn't know what Trump would do, and so they shifted towards him based on vibes. Now they are finding out, and they hate it.
Nearly every county in Virginia has shifted blue in a massive statement against Donald Trump.

Whenever Dems suggested doing this (or even hinted as Biden did in the runup to the 2022 midterms), the media leapt into action to declare it to be a hideously unpopular overreach that would surely boomerang on Dems if they went through with it

Ppl could just wait 48 hours for his friends and family to say what “he got more political” means

Other profiles and discord chats and whatever will prob drop.

Instead ppl pick 2 bits of evidence - a t-shirt, a Halloween costume, a meme on a bullet - and decide THEY KNOW. They don’t, yet.
Things are pretty early but — Tyler Robinson, the guy arrested for the Charlie Kirk murder, doesn’t scream “extremely online nihilist” either. Going as a meme for Halloween is not weird. Irony culture isn’t always nihilistic.

The need to have an immediate answer is a side effect of social media.

What Sarah brings up below is a good example of what I mean - selectively editing a Trump soundbite to make him sound less unhinged and rude, to take out of context only the words that make him sound reasonable? Don't print lies in the newspaper! bsky.app/profile/sgoo...
It's interesting that mainstream outlets that I heard, like NPR, only ran the audio from his statement that made him sound more reasonable, starting with "We're not going to war" and omitting his degrading remarks to the reporter (why?!?). But his supporters are proud of the degradation.

"healthcare" i.e. fixing the ACA subsidies is worth nothing in these negotiations. Trump should want to do that on his own because massive insurance premium increases will sap his popularity going into the midterms. Bargaining for something that will HELP Trump's popularity is insanity
Sherman is essentially a GOP spokesman. But the outlines here are probably right. I’ve heard that Senate Ds say they’re in the verge of cutting a deal. So you’d expect this moment for House Ds to start firing up wtfs.

they like trump and want to help him. that's the entire thing that's going on here.
This is incredibly silly. Of course he did. What even is the alternate theory of the case? You're not obligated to treat it as some kind of seriously open question just because Trump denies it.

You have a baby too young to vaccinate, and your older kid is exposed to Freedom Measles or Populist Polio in their classroom.

You don’t have kids, but you may be impacted if you have cancer.

Herd immunity is the point. The silent majority needs to get loud; make this a political liability for Ron.

KASIE HUNT: Over the summer you said, “There’s no vaccine that’s safe and effective”. Do you still believe that?

Earlier this week, I asked which tie knot you think looks better. Of course, you can wear whichever you like. But here's the social history behind both knots and why some people consider one better than the other. 🧵
One knot is bigger, more symmetrical. The other knot is smaller, less symmetrical.

Which looks better to you?

gutting the nation's medical research system for no reason just isn't a big deal front page story like george clooney saying biden is old or hillary clinton using a private email server
It’s stunning to me that the New York Times did not put the story on the bloodbath at the NIH, CDC, and FDA on its front page this morning.
