Saw this in an article while researching MCAS.

"Their symptoms will rarely prove fatal, but their lives will be long and miserable, and they may end by nearly exhausting their families and friends."

Fuck you. I'm going to have a happy, beautiful, mutually-supportive, love-filled life out of spite.

bring back believing people when they (loudly, publicly, repeatedly) tell you who they are
Never ask me to give a politician benefit of the doubt

I care what people do (or don’t) at least as much as what they say (or don’t)

the “thanksgiving food is bad” discourse raises its ugly head every year, but the truth remains that thanksgiving food can be amazing as long as you know how to cook. the problem is we’re throwing a few million sunday drivers directly into a grand prix
I think this is unfair to turkey. turkey is good but hard to cook well because it is so damn big. turkey *parts* are great but lack the esthetic appeal of a centerpiece bird.
it is tired to the point of cliche to say if turkey was good, people would make it more than once a year. but it is understated that at least one American explodes every Thanksgiving in a brave attempt to make the main dish more palatable

Some vaccines like COVID and flu don’t stop completely stop infection.

But they do reduce the risk of getting infected and greatly reduce severe illness risk.

They are still worth getting.

Since they are not 100% effective it’s also wise to add another layer of protection by wearing a mask.

I was always warned I'd end up a spinster cat lady. Now that I am, I have some thoughts.

(a) weird way to say "having hobbies, loving pets, and some goddamn peace and quiet", and (b) someone has to keep volunteering over the holiday breaks instead of prioritizing family chaos.

So, you're welcome.

having to explain chills and goosebumps from awe and wonder while reading a picture book to kids, when...

kindergartener: "the book is shaking"

me: "yeah sometimes I shake when I get excited. Like a chihuahua."

I lost them. The room erupted. The adults were laughing too. No recovering from that.

Starbucks baristas have done everything right — organized, bargained, and stood together.

But the CEO still refuses to offer a fair contract or end union busting.

If baristas go on ULP strike, our response is simply DON’T BUY STARBUCKS.

Kid 1: It's raining ducks!

Kid 2: no, it's raining dogs

Kid 1: no, hay patos. *points to the window*

me: primeramente, esos no son patos. son ganzos, geese. segundamente, la frase en íngles es "It's raining cats and dogs", no solo "dogs". se faltan los gatos.

said that with a straight face.

Ayer veía este video de @hankgreen.bsky.social y es increíble como usaron la Argentina de prueba piloto.

En el video habla de la crueldad del gobierno y que toman la desición de quitarle la comida a la gente con la excusa de que "no hay plata"

Border Patrol grabbed workers from the front yard of a home in Edison Park this afternoon then took them behind an office building in Niles and passed them off to a prisoner van. Woman came out to MF them and said "you're in the most conservative neighborhood in the city and nobody wants you here."

I see it all of the time and everywhere. So many people DO NOT KNOW WHAT IS GOING ON and this is actually usually by design. People are busy trying to survive, people are in info silos, people don't like to do politics, etc etc etc...

The truest thing anyone has ever said On Here is @prisonculture.bsky.social's bang-on statement that most Americans simply do not know what's going on. And people continue to equate "illegal" with "impossible." (If you doubt that, read my mentions.)

Recently my brother in law explained what gerrymandering was to a coworker and they didn’t believe him because if that were really happening there would be riots in the street
This week I had someone tell me they're not worried about SNAP being cut off because "that's illegal, so it's impossible Trump could do that, so obviously it's just media sensationalism." Another person told me they weren't worried about ICE because "they can't detain you if you're legally here."

today in teaching in 2025, I went out to the parking lot to confront a strange truck idling after school, and it was an administrator from the district office watching for ICE during an afterschool event.

ICE watch confronting ICE watch.
