I think it might also be good to reflect on how bribery works. You don't by and large get a suitcase of cash with an explicit request to do something (or not do it). You get taken out to dinner. You get gifts. You get friendly conversations about "concerns" that of course you want to keep in mind.

If accurate, everyone involved should be deeply ashamed and never allowed anywhere near a Hugo ceremony ever again. This is appalling, embarrassing and an absolute abdication of duty. They should have all resigned instead of becoming willing censors. Apologies are owed those removed from the ballot.
For the last few weeks I've been working with Chris Barkley @cmzhang42.bsky.social of @file770.bsky.social on a report about censorship in the 2023 Hugo Awards.

Leaked emails and files indicate authors and works deemed “not eligible” for the awards were removed due to political considerations. 1/3

Oh my God, I've got a great idea for a screenplay that if filmed and fully realized, would be a great tax write-off for a multi-conglomerate film studio. This is a passion project of mine, so I really hope it gets made and then is never seen by anyone.

Two rats have to be drift compatible to pilot a chef together
We need a double or triple ratatouille situation. The rat is being piloted by a hyper intelligent chef flea which is the source of the rat’s powers. The French chef boy is also a mecha pilot. Evangelion except that the Eva is piloted by ratatouille shinji

From the Department of "Gee Sounds Bad When You Put It All Together Like This"

-purging the civil service
-mass deportations
-new Muslim ban
-trade wars
-ban gender-affirming care for kids
-no federal funds for health care providers that support transition
-criminalizing homelessness
Trump's plans if he returns to the White House include deportation raids, tariffs and mass firings
Donald Trump is already laying a sweeping set of policy goals should he win a second term as president.

"We come in peace!" he said, lowering the hood of his robe to reveal a weather-worn, but smiling face. I stepped forward to shake his hand, but an outstretched hand stopped me. "Count his fingers!" she hissed. I did. Seven fingers on one hand. Six on the other. He was an AI. I drew my machete

Did you know that New Zealand and other land masses in the south-west Pacific are home to LEAF-VEINED SLUGS?

Unlike their omnivorous European relatives, these slugs eat only fungi. They breathe mainly through the skin of the back, which is kept moist by secretions passing along the many grooves. 🧪

Folks, look, Scholastic is only a billion-dollar juggernaut that dominates the children’s book industry. What are they supposed to do about fascist book banning and censorship in the face of 11 racists sending angry emails? Whatever they want because they literally can? C’mon. Be reasonable.

🧵. Kelly makes suggestions if you are sitting in a morass of "what can I do?"

If you can just show up & speak for literacy, and how graphic novels and TV tie-ins and books about people like ME (whoever Me is) increase reading, ability, literacy.

ELEVEN people are behind over half the book banning.
1. Go to your local library and fill out request forms.

2. Show up at your local school board meetings. Sign up to speak. Remind them that access to books that are relevant and relatable INCREASES LITERACY, which is literally the job of schools

3. Show up at library board meetings. Same thing.
