It just feels like everything is being flattened. Rape, genocide, wildfires, etc etc is all just fodder for internet discourse rather than turning points that lead to… something, anything better or different.
It’s so true. It’s actually horrifying to see the memes and jokes about this.

After manually compiling Columbus City Council District 7 election results last week, I scraped the data from Franklin County's API and created interactive maps that show why Jesse Vogel won his district (62%) but still lost citywide.

How many Americans use food stamps? The numbers vary from month to month. But in May 2025, the most recent month with available figures, 41.7 million people received SNAP benefits. That works out to nearly 1 in every 8 people in the country. www.pewresearch.org/...

Ooo, today's ride was a fun one. Highlights include:

1) Braking abruptly to avoid a car turning onto 17th from Summit, only to skid on leaves plastering the bike lane.

Columbus City Council has a hybrid at-large districting system. A councilmember must live in the district but the entire city votes on the election.

Last night in the District 7 race, Jesse Vogel handily won his own district, but lost the overall election to Tiara Ross.

Ross 51%
Vogel 49%

50 years ago today, #OTD in Weather History, on November 10, 1975, the Great Lake ore freighter SS EDMUND FITZGERALD was lost with all hands in a severe storm on Lake Superior.

So it is time for the annual reupping of my thread on her loss.

She is perhaps the best known shipwreck on the Great Lakes, and today we remember her loss. 1/

Being a voter in Columbus is like being the only kid at a party who didn't get any cake. Like, yeah, there's ice cream and candy that are fine, but damn, that chocolate cake looked delicious and you really wanted a piece.

They specifically want to prevent voters from having a choice to fund libraries, yeesh
The Ohio House will soon vote on a Republican-backed bill that would allow counties, cities and other local governments to block library levies from the ballot. But libraries said voters deserve the right to make the decision on those money issues.

Bill would let Ohio taxing authorities keep library levies off ballots
Republicans say allowing local taxing authorities in Ohio to block library levies would increase transparency, but libraries say it will hurt them and voters.
