AHEM, COLUMBUS.
If you need a car to get from the airport to your city’s downtown, your airport sucks. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

We meant to repost this and then got sidetracked, whoops!

Here's why we keep hoping and fighting and working. Change is happening!
I can drop into literally any city in North America in Google Maps (any city I’ve tried, even very car-centric ones).

And pretty quickly find decent pedestrian or cycling improvements that happened in the past 5 or 10 years.

Like this part of Columbus, Ohio that didn’t use to have sidewalks.

To public agencies scolding pedestrians for walking along the roadway: we have no other choice if sidewalks are still not cleared.

At least this bus stop on North Main St. in Providence has a path from the curb to shelter. Good for able-bodied riders but a nightmare for people with disabilities. 😫

The conditions on N. Wilson Road where a person was struck and killed late Monday night are about what you would expect - a nightmare for someone trying to get anywhere without a car.

Safer cycling doesn't require more space. It just requires a better allocation of the space we already have.

This pubbed a week ago while I was on vacation someplace warm (yes, I did pay someone to shovel my walk while I was gone), but wrote about why mutual aid is getting more important for street safety, especially as government gets more violent.
Shoveling a Snowy Sidewalk Is An Act of Resistance — Streetsblog USA
Shoveling a sidewalk in winter is always a critical act of community care — but in an era of government assault on civil liberties, it's also an act of resistance.

"What if we prioritized clearing bus stops so riders could wait safely, rather than on the road inches from deadly traffic? That’s the world I want to live in, where my city centers the safety and the dignity of its citizens and ensures safety across all forms of transit."

"What if Columbus cleared sidewalks like our roads and actively enforced the city code requiring property owners and businesses to shovel their sidewalks, so pedestrians can move freely with less risk from cars?"

Letters: Trump needs to fix our mail system. There's no protection for pedestrians. Ohio pays a hefty price for natural gas, oil usage.

This kind of smart, walkable, mixed-use urbanism is illegal to build in most American cities.

While we love to see the camaraderie and community, cities should clear bike lanes. Not citizens.
Boston did not clear snow from the bike lanes after the storm two weeks ago, so our community came together to do so. "We just want to get home safe and alive!" @bikeboston.bsky.social @streets.boston.gov @mayorwu.boston.gov @universalhub.com @wcvb5.bsky.social @mass.streetsblog.org

Columbus's Snow and Ice Plan contains no mention of pedestrians, sidewalks, cyclists, or bike lanes. Miles of sidewalks remain uncleared across the city.

Winter Storm Fern is exacerbating existing issues around mobility and accessibility in our community.

Columbus had two pedestrians struck while walking on the road in a span of about twenty-four hours. One was critically injured and another was killed.

One location had zero sidewalks.
The other had sidewalks that were completely buried in snow and ice.

grateful to @brentincolumbus.bsky.social for pointing out why someone might be walking in the street. i urge other journalists covering traffic fatalities to follow his lead. it *does not have to be this way* and the more we ID the actual problem, the more we can push for the right solutions.

We had a blast building benches and shoveling with Strong Towns Columbus in honor of Transit Equity Day!

did you kmow that as a community you can just do things!

you dont have to wait for austerity brained politicians and beurocracy to move. you can just make the world a better place.

and if they want you to stop, well, they should fund basic necessities
like benches at bus stops!
In total, twenty-nine people worked together to shovel nine bus stops, and build three benches.
