This is also why universal basic income would do so much for educational outcomes. Not only via kids no longer being hungry at school, but also by kids coming home to less stressed out parents who can spend more time with them and help with their studying at home.
I don't know about you, but it's damn near impossible for me, an adult, to focus when I'm hungry and I can't imagine how difficult it is for a child to learn under those same conditions
School lunches get a bad rap, but they're healthier than the average packed lunch. And making them free for all amplifies academic and health benefits for low-income kids by removing stigma/shame.
So I'm glad Colorado voted to raise taxes on high-income households to make school meals free for all.

I love that Zohran did not praise Cuomo in his speech. You absolutely do not have to say nice things about bad people. We should normalize that in “polite” politics: Praising bad people is not actually “civility.”

One other thing that's unusual about this election is that Mamdani really, really hated his political opponent and wanted him to lose. That's also incredibly rare on the left of American politics, if you think about it.
Cuomo gave a fairly graceless concession speech, and Mamdani rips his skin off:
