This letter pretends it is reasonable and obvious but ultimately is an attempt to excuse a dozen or more ways of letting anti-human, pro-techlord, environment-destroying septic AI into our industry, organizations and processes. But there just isn’t an ethical use of generative AI, full stop.

Binx is fixing me with the 'FEED ME' stare.

Who teaches cats to do this? Is it passed from a parent cat to their kittens? Do younger cats pick it up from older cats or siblings? Or does it come from some unseen 'How to Train Your Human' manual?

We're putting together our monthly newsletter! If you have January opportunities for writers, let us know - we're particularly interested in sharing opportunities for writers in the North of England, and for writers of speculative fiction.

I feel this. It's no coincidence that gardening was something I enjoyed this year. Fewer devices, less tracking, more care. Paper books, friends IRL, walking, tea, perfume, cinema, gigs...
Just be mindful that the attention economy is *not*your friend and not everything is accomplished by shopping.
Buttons are back. Knobs are back. Dumb devices are back. Own-it-forever software is back. Print is back. Personal websites and chronological feeds are back. Touching grass is back. People keep saying 2015, but it’s not far enough. The entire 2010s were a mistake. We must retvrn to… 2009.
Amazingly, reaction times using screens while driving are worse than being drunk or high—no wonder 90 percent of drivers hate using touchscreens in cars. Finally the auto industry is coming to its senses.

For further context twitter added a button that allows users to generate ai images using existing art posts from artists. It removes glaze and it basically reskins the artwork by using the existing work as a base. Twitter is no longer a safe space for art

Second night of a sleeping (or quiet) Binx.

He's no longer scrab-scrabbling endlessly at the door, and has settled to sitting on Isaac's windowsill, looking out at the world below.

Very pleased the new kitty is adjusting, though getting into, and out of, the flat is requiring...

This has been everywhere, and it's so true.

My son asks me how I know so many people in SFF, books, comics, geek culture, etc, and it's this. It's just because we were all at the same events, the signings, the Cons, and we all hung out and made friends.

And we're still friends, decades later.
Talking to one of these types at a con who asked how I 'got in' with so many 'famous writers' who I'd been talking to and I said "we made friends before anyone knew who we were decades ago by striking up interesting conversations and enjoying each other's company" and he kept re-asking the question.
They have come to the convention hoping to "break in" and then find themselves -- shocker! -- a "nobody in the book world." Yeah no shit! We all are! I have gently told guys like this a million times that it takes most of us *years* of hard work but they do not believe that could be true for them. +

I will not buy your AI book
I will not give its text a look
I will not share your AI art
I will not share even a part
I will not play your AI game
I will not play it, feel some shame!
Use your soul and heart and head
And make us things to love, instead

(With apologies to Dr. Seuss).

Hunting is VERY high up my list of 'Things I Absolutely Fucking Despise', not only because of its appalling cruelty, but because of the damage it does to farmlands, its utter disregard of rural people, and the ruination it brings.

The arrogance of these cunts is beyond words.

BAN IT.
Such patronising guff - “all the rural people want is to lick off a little of the muddy fox blood from the master of the hunt’s riding boots before offering their youngest daughter to a Freemason dressed as a sex beagle”
Labour ‘alienating rural people’ with plan to ban trail hunting, says Countryside Alliance

Delighted to discover that, while this is of its time, it's actually dated incredibly well. Remember watching it as a teen (cough), and it's not doing so badly!

And we have success.

Major engineering project yesterday, putting MDF over the cat flap and then blocking it completely (I shit you not) with the fucking kitchen table...

...and Binx has FINALLY stopped spending all night yowling and trying to escape.

Looks like he won't be slippers, after all.

My Mother, going around and telling people that I a) 'gave money to boys', while simultaneously b) 'needed a man to take care of me'.

In the ten-plus years since she passed, I've often wondered about this strange, Schrodinger's Boyfriend, and who he might have been...

Night three of a very, VERY determined kitty, trying to get out of the catflap.

The catflap is locked, has a thick sheet of cardboard taped over the top, and two heavy boxes in front of that (stable ones, so he can't pull them over or hurt himself).

Scrabblescrabblescrabble.

Every 15 minutes.
