It’s the seventh anniversary of the publication of ‘Everything is awesome: Don’t forget the Lego’ in the Journal of Paediatrics and Child Health, which told how six “paediatric health-care professionals were recruited to swallow a Lego head” and measure how long it took to ~ahem~ pass through them

I reckon you can learn a lot about the atmosphere in various Oxford colleges by looking at what they choose to name their cats (courtesy of @oxfordclarion.bsky.social ). We should all aspire to the energy of a Teabag, Isambard Kitten Brunel, or an Admiral Flapjack

They're also responsible for one of the best emails I've ever received, when the college office sent out a plea for sightings of Professor Biscuit while conveniently forgetting to mention that he was a cat...(I won't comment on how often a similar email might have gone out about human Professors...)

It definitely is a problem in the left-leaning half of the political spectrum. Often enough, LGBTQ+, environmentalism, and pro-social politics are lumped together with anti-capitalism and anti-militarism. These are, however, five broadly separate things!

Who could *possibly* have predicted this

It's almost like writing NHS exemptions into the worst of new immigration policy is not enough on its own, because docs are smart enough to read the room and question the overall mood and the welcome Vs hostility

Medical bodies warn that hostility towards migrants is behind a 26% rise in departures last year that imperils NHS

-a campaign to get lifechanging medication for extremely sick children
-a campaign to improve access to justice for victims of rape and sexual assault
-a transphobic hate campaign that managed to convince some judges to make the worst ruling in Supreme Court history*

a friend of mine messaged me the other day the sentence "just seen on tiktok that varg vikernes had released an ai album" and we were wondering how we'd explain that sentence to our teenage selves

(ironically the only thing in that sentence we'd have definitely recognised is varg vikernes)

There are many shortcomings with the Nazi bar analogy, but one of them is that X really isn't so much a 'is it a Nazi bar', it is 'you arrive at your favourite bar. The landlord is busy pissing in a bucket, adding red dye and pouring it in the red wine bottles. Order a glass of white, Y/N?'

On this Transgender Day of Remembrance, I raise my voice to shout and wail and cry in ellegy for all those we have lost, those we are even now losing, and those we will yet still lose. What is remembered lives and unto them may there be granted the accomplishment of their wills.

It annoys me when nominal support for LGBT rights is used instrumentally to push for clout or unrelated goals. But I *really* hate it when it’s treated as basically a cringe bourgeois affectation, whether it be the right, left, or center that’s pulling out that old canard.

when I was young, i used to wonder how people like this would fare in life, as they didn't seem suited for gainful employment. it turns out, the internet allowed them to accumulate a massive audience of similar idiots, enriching them and turning them into a presidential advisor

I don't think the EHRC had to write such a bad code based on the SC decision though! They've taken a maximally transphobic view because they are an institutionally transphobic body (just like much of the British establishment, I have to say).

It's very laughable that the equality law quango in the UK has concluded that "look 'em in the eye and have a reckon as to whether you think they're a tranny" is an acceptable or viable way to implement equality law. The Supreme Court decision in Scottish Ministers vs. For Women Scotland is so bad.

Among many other things, so-called «generative AI» is a paranoia machine: It quite literally produces plausibility out of hallucinations
LLMs give people with delusional belief systems a way to organise those beliefs. The model fills in gaps, supplies connective tissue, and wraps the madness in formal language.
It doesn't make the claims more credible to us, it just tidies them up.
