Tis the season to spread interesting food stories. Today's pick:

Barcelona has fallen in love with Fish & Chips because of two Spanish-Pakistani brothers wanted to bring home the taste they remembered from trips to British chippies in Mallorca

The Pakistani brothers making a splash in Spain with British fish and chips
Majid and Mani Alam opened The Fish&Chips Shop in Barcelona to satisfy a late-night craving. From there, they’ve built a foodie empire

I once did a deeply puerile thing and rang the Home Office to ask for comment on the growing campaign to abolish the Home Office, which was basically "one think tank paper and some posts". The note of genuine panic in the flack's voice is something I cherish to this day. See how you fucking like it.
This is so disgusting.

Blocking weirdos is the one feature this app absolutely excels at. Two clicks & annoying strangers disappear forever. Unprecedented feeling.
I cannot stress enough that is some rando responds to something you reposted trying to draw you into a “but have you considered” discussion of it, they are not acting in good faith, and you just block. Please, embrace the blue sky way. block. block. block.

This is such a good insight that I hope someone with money and talent opens the Dishroom for Sri Lankan food the world (ed note. he really just means himself) deserves.
IMO the gaps in the market are at the upper end. Dishoom made "up-market Indian cuisine with small plates" a national/international phenomenon. The "Dishoom vibes for other diasporas cuisine" is pretty wide open at the moment

This post may be me manifesting "Dishoom for Nigerian food pls"

This is your annual reminder that in Japan, Christmas has almost nothing to do with Santa, St Nicholas etc

It's (literally) the annual KFC holiday
🇯🇵 KFC prepares a finger-licking Christmas in Japan

Christmas kicks off in Japan as KFC opens its Tokyo Christmas pop-up restaurant. The fast-food chain offers customers dishes inspired by Japan's "Christmas chicken" tradition, dating back to 1974.

In the name of Hades, what do you mean Thomas? What connects these seemingly very different things -namely figs and liver- together?

The essence of Blue Labour thought is that somewhere in Downing Street there is a button marked “reindustrialise” that Tony Blair could have pressed, but instead he opted for the “more Woke Studies” button.
My brother in Christ, reindustrialization is based on international capital flows, not dumbass ideas to move down the value chain by turning colleges into vocational schools. You do realize that modern industry is almost always *high* skilled automation?

Read your Michael Pettis, you utter clown.
No reindustrialising? Our academic institutions are a part of the problem, overproducing elites and funnelling them into bullshit unproductive jobs. Half the universities need to close or become vocational colleges. You didn't even mention productivity.

Brexit is in the past. That ship has sailed.

Technology is cool and all but did you ever happen to think that what is possibly the most impressive and comprehensive transit signal priority system in the world, Zurich's, is essentially based on updated versions of 1970s and 80s tech, i.e. induction loops, antennas and basic programming?
