How did i become a writer? I was born into poverty, dropped out of hs to pay rent and then lived in decades of almost drowning economically for decades after until I got lucky and got into a housing initiative for homeless mentally ill people. if not? I would have died in 2010 at the latest.
The reason there's no working class representation in publishing is because publishing and writing currently pay so badly only people who are already financially stable can afford to do it.
The problem is always, always money.
My problem with things like these is that working-class writing ends up being literary stories about how dreary it is being working class. They're not interested in examining the working class through the lens of fantasy, for example.

For the love of all that is good, please stop making me have to repost this.
Apparently, people still need to be reminded of this.

This year I will publish my 50th book. Many are New York Times best sellers. And this past month I submitted a new science fiction Short story to a couple of magazines and was rejected by both. Rejection never stops. I hope this is validating to those in the pains of current rejection.

if you can't write every day, don't write every day. If a project isn't working for you, set it aside.

If you're certain kinds of neurodivergent, a lot of advice about building habits and skill simply won't work or may drive you away from writing. It's ok. Do it your way.

Stop second-guessing yourself on a rough draft. Nobody is ever going to see it except you.

Do you want to write in a horribly cringy cliche scene that does not relate to the plot? Do it. It's fun.

Being creative in the rough draft is more important than making sense. That's what editing is for.

Also: so long as it makes sense and holds water, plot doesn't really matter. Swiss-watch plots are swell, but in the end, no one remembers plot. (Tell me, in detail, the plot to any James Bond movie.) They remember the moments they were emotionally engaged, when their blood was up.

Writer's block is, 90% of the time, your subconscious holding you back because you've taken a wrong turn. Go back to the last place the story was really working and try taking a left turn or two, see what happens. It costs you nothing and can really limber you up.

People took all the wrong lessons from Tolkien (fantasy race determinism, long-prophesied return of the king, lore coming out your ears)

and none of the right ones (subversive heroes who succeed through failure, overwhelming grief at the passing of an enchanted world).
People complain a lot about the influence of #Tolkien on fantasy, but I do think it’s fascinating a series about PTSD is so influential, and that ineffable sadness of a world long gone is such an interesting starting place for the modern genre
