I think it's really interesting how the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games took an established and iconic trope -- throwing metal nuts to determine the location and shape of an anomaly -- and tweaked it JUST a tiny bit and now every single derivative video game uses 'throwing bolts' as the standard.
