Heritage American has to be the dumbest thing I've heard of in quite a while. And considering what has occurred in 2025, that's pretty damn amazing.
All you need to know to realize “Heritage American” is racist bullshit is those who use the term don’t include Black descendants of enslaved people. (Which I say as someone whose ancestry here traces to the 1600s and includes a signer of the Declaration of Independence and a Revolutionary War hero.)
For those not following at home, “Heritage American” is a category of white supremacy covering people whose ancestors were white folks who were pioneers.

12YO girl signed up to do “stand up comedy” at the talent show. 13YO boy decided to heckle her. Teacher started to tell the boy to leave her alone, but the 12YO comedian said “no, no, let him go, this is the closest he’s ever going to get to having a conversation with a girl.”
What's an insult you'll never forget?

All birds are dinosaurs and just as closely related to non-bird dinosaurs as any other bird.

But cassowaries are the most nostalgic for the good ol days.

They might be the “girl who still curls her bangs because her first boyfriend said they made her look pretty in 1987” of birds

honestly between terminator 2 and alien 2 i'm starting to kind of hate james cameron. both very good films but also both watering down near-perfect movies into lowest common denominator action sequels. it sucks even worse that the films are good because you can't just dismiss them out of hand

Probably the best Christmas Eve news I've ever reported:

The VA is legally required to build homes for unhoused veterans in Los Angeles — and homeless vets nationwide might be able to sue for shelter, too.

@longlead.com has been covering this story for 4 years — and we're not stopping here!
The homeless veterans who sued the VA for access to housing in Los Angeles won their appeal against the government yesterday.

The decision was complex, but may be consequential in eliminating veteran homelessness across the country.

Appeals court upholds landmark ruling in homeless veterans lawsuit against the VA
A long-awaited ruling by the 9th Circuit reinforces an order for the VA to build thousands of housing units for vets — but with some unexpected caveats.

I could say plenty about this, and I could quote plenty in this article, but this one short sentence from the article says everything:
"The ableism and the racism go together."

The ableism is foundational.
“It turns out that banishing the slur from public discourse was, in fact, important. Because now it’s back and it turns out that it does matter when subtext becomes actual text, when terrible people enable open hatred and bigotry, encouraging others to emulate them, degrading us all.”
Perry: The return of the r-word
"These days, the r-word slur has become a staple of the American right wing, uttered with few professional or social consequences," David M. Perry writes.
